Just some advice when you guys submit questions. Try and be specific as possible with player names. I had one question that I had to skip over because they wrote a name that could of been several players. The more specific you are, the better the chance you have at getting your question posted and answered.
Thanks and onto this weeks Q&A.
Robert (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) I am in an 8 person league with a 16 round draft. All of the magazines advice about which position to draft in each round is based on a 12 person league. How will an 8 person league's strategy change, and what order would you suggest.
The Jungle 8 team leagues don't change much at the top. You still want Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson, Brian Westbrook and in my opinion Steve Jackson with those early picks. The back end though you may want to take a different position early because running backs #7 to #20 are all potential fantasy starters. For example you pick #7 and you have a chance of taking Randy Moss or my #7 RB Marion Barber. Do you stick to RB-RB method or "cheat" your board and go with the top receiver?
I think selecting Randy Moss this year with a late pick might be worth it. I think Moss in a 12 team league might be worth a 1st round pick. This assures that you grab the best fantasy receiver in the league and you'll still end up with one of the top 12 fantasy backs with your 2nd pick and probably a top 20 back with your 3rd pick. That's at the very least.
It all comes down to what the guys ahead of you end up doing. The one thing great about 8 team league is everyone should have good depth and for the most part everyone should have a chance at the league title.
Will (Gaithersburg, MD) Thanks for the help! I'm looking to trade a RB for a top WR. Right now I have Addai(ind), Lynch(buf), Lewis(cle), Brown(mia). I want to trade at least one for a WR. Who would be a good value to trade and which WR should I pursue?
The Jungle Well if you can get value for Ronnie Brown then get it. Ricky Williams is probably going to get at least 50% of the carries in Miami this year. That's if Brown can get healthy. The reality of the situation is Williams is probably the guy in Miami once again. So try and get value for Brown if you can. If not then as a #3 back you can live with him.
Personally, I wouldn't deal Addai at all. Lynch and Lewis rate out about the same in my opinion. I actually have them #11 and #12 in my rankings. I do like Lewis a little more because I think he'll have more touchdown opportunities so moving Lynch might be your best case here in acquiring a top WR.
I like a lot of receivers this year. Lynch for someone like Marques Colston, Plaxico Burress, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Torry Holt, Chad Johnson, or T.J. Houshmandzadeh. If you need a chart then checkout the jungles expert rankings table. My rankings are on there along with a lot other jungle experts.
Billy (Gaithersburg, MD) I have a stud squad that could be better picked from 9th spot in ten man league. My RB's are Joseph Addai, Marshawn Lynch, Jamal Lewis, Ronnie Brown, Kevin Smith and Rashard Mendenhall. With WR Randy Moss, Marques Colston, Roddy White, Dwayne Bowe. My QB is Mark Bulger or Jake Delhomme. Question is which RB's are worth giving up for a third stud wide out or a better QB? Should I risk giving up Lewis or Lynch for Housh or Plex?
The Jungle You are set at receiver. First of all Moss and Colston are top 10 fantasy receivers this year in my rankings. I have Moss #1 and Colston #8. Then you have two talents to be your #3 this year. Bowe has a chance to be a rock solid #3. He's my #24 receiver. White is my #27. For a 10 man league using 3 receivers, you have according to my rankings, 4 starters. Two elites and 2 good #3's.
Your QB's are shaky because both are injury prone. That could be the downfall for your team. It's a risk. If you can get a top caliber QB. Maybe Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, or Ben Roethlisberger then you wouldn't have a weakness on that team. At least not at QB, WR, and RB. If you can't get a QB that meets your standards for Lynch's value then Delhomme and Bulger are good enough to ge the job done in my opinion.
Berzain (Fontana, CA) I just got a trade proposal in my league and I needed your advice on it. He offered me Drew Brees and Brandon Jacobs for Joseph Addai and Brett Favre. I really like Joseph Addai and I feel Favre will be okay in NY. What should I do?
The Jungle I'm higher on Jacobs than most people. He averaged 5 yards a carry last year so he should be getting the ball a lot more this year especially in the red zone. If he can stay healthy then he's got a lot of upside in my opinion.
However, Addai is just to good to trade. Favre is a bit of a risk but he's always been a decent fantasy QB. Even in New York, I think 3,500 yards and 20 TD's is within reach. The question will be INT's obviously but that always is with Brett Favre. I wouldn't do the trade.
Justin (Dayton, Ohio) I am in a keeper league that is PPR (point per reception). I am keeping Tom Brady and Adrian Peterson. In the first round should I snag Andre Johnson or Wes Welker with the 10th pick in the first round?
The Jungle Andre Johnson. Two years ago he caught 103 passes. Last year he had 60 in 9 games. Do the math and he's about 105 catches last year in terms of projections. Plus he's still going to have more yardage and touchdowns than Wes Welker. Between those two, I say Johnson all the way.
Dale (Chicago, Illinois) Who would you draft between Lary Johnson and Portis? I know most list says Portis, but I am leaning towards Johnson.
The Jungle I would take Portis and here is my sell.
He's safer. The Redskins are a better team and they have a better offensive line. They also have a better QB and top to bottom a better receiving core. Although I think Bowe is probably the best out of any of them.
I think it's unlikely that teams will be able to stack the box on Portis. Compared to Larry Johnson who will be seeing 7 man fronts all day long. Kansas City's offensive line also isn't that great. LJ was never as good as his numbers in the past indicated. The offensive line was. I think LJ is a quality back but I don't like the situation he's in compared to Clinton Portis. Plus Portis now healthy and I really think 1,300 yards and 10+ touchdowns.
He'll also catch more passes in the west coast offense in my opinion. Specifically the screen which Mike Holmgrem ran a lot in Seattle. Washington's new coach is Jim Zorn who worked under Holmgrem.
David I am in a 12-team league, with a fairly standard scoring position. I am currently slated as the 5th pick; we draft in a serpentine order. Before the draft, we do have the opportunity to change our position in the draft order. From your experience, what position in a 12 man draft has been the most successful?
The Jungle You can win from anywhere as long as you know what your doing. Now obviously everyone has a preference. This year I think the 4th pick because I really like four backs. Tomlinson, Peterson, Westbrook and Jackson.
From my experience I've always had success from everywhere I've drafted. I have found that my best teams have come from when I have a top 3 pick but I don't see a problem with the 5th pick. |
