Ryan told ESPN's Rachel Nichols late Sunday that he could find out about the Jets' job as early as tonight. "We'll see. There were no pre-arrangements made or anything, though. I was completely focused on our team."

This is a good move for the Jets. Now hears what has to happen.
1. Rex Ryan has to be allowed to pick his coaching staff. I like Schottenheimer and I think he gets a bad rap but if Ryan doesnt want guys like him, Callahan, etc then dont make him take them.
2. Brett Favre cant be the QB of this football team next year. Once again I like Favre and still think it was a good gamble by the FO but its not fair to strap Ryan with Favre and the publicity he brings. Hopefully Brett retires. Great career and I have a ton of respect for the guy but I think the Jets have to go in a different direction.
3. So basically what im saying is that Rex Ryan has to be allowed to pick his coaches and players. It's not fair to bring a coach into a situation and stick him with guys he may not want.

Another reason I like the Rex Ryan hire: Who better to develop Gholston?

I agree. Also when I look at the Baltimore Free Agents on Defense I really like what I see.
Ray Lewis
Terrell Suggs
Bart Scott
Dawan Landry- RFA
Jim Leonhard
Corey Ivy
I like building through the draft but most of the time your always going to add 1 or 2 guys through Free Agency especially when you have a Head Coaching change. Im just naming the Ravens that are available because they are the guys Ryan is most familiar with.
Obviously you got the big 3 in Lewis, Suggs, and Scott. Lewis isnt going anywhere and Suggs will probably be franchised. I think a guy like Bart Scott could be let go. I have been holding out for him since Rex Ryan was named a serious candidate for the Jets. I think by draft time Mauluaga will be out of the Jets reach unless they decide to trade up (thats the guy I want)so with a need at ILB next to Harris Scott could be a possibility.
As for the other guys there all just ok but basically there better then what the Jets have. I dont think Leonhard is anything special. I think he is a product of the players he plays around but I believe he is a Rex Ryan favorite.
Dawan Landry is a RFA and is their starting Safety opposite Reed so I would expect him to return and Ivy is an upgrade over pretty much everybody except Revis and Rhodes IMO.
And yes like you said I hope he can get great play out of Vernon Gholston

Jets are so far over the cap right now that the last thing on their mind is going to be signing free agents in my opinion. I think they could possibly make way for one and that's assuming Favre retires or is released.

The Jets cap situation isnt as bad as people think.
Mike Tannenbaum was brought to the Jets by Parcells as a Cap expert. Thats really how he got his start in the NFL.
The Jets I think are believed to be 8 million over the cap. If Favre retires they are under. Theres a lot of dead weight on the Jets that can afford to be cut now because the Jets save money by doing so. Cutting David Barret for example gives the Jets 4 million in cap relief. They have other guys as well like Bowens, Coleman, and possibly even Ellis and or Baker. Then you take into account that the Salary Cap will be raised this year and the Jets have room to work with. You can always move around money.

With the announcement that Tom Cable will become the Raiders full time HC, I believe all coaching vacancies are now filled
