Default K.C. to trade Jared Allen?

According to CBSSportsline.com, the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to trade Defensive End Jared Allen for a 1st round draft pick (and possibly a 4th rounder, as well). Interested teams are reported to be the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

I've heard more about Minnesota than either of the other teams. I think he'd be a good fit there, defintely more proven than a defensive end that Minnesota could draft at that point.

Makes you think KC is hoping Gholston or Chris Long will fall to them.

I don't know. I thought about Gholston in my last mock but It seems like they're eying up Albert with that 5th pick unless Dorsey or Jake Long fall there. I don't agree with it but that just seems to be the position they're taking. A lot like Arizona reaching for Levi Brown last year even though I think this is an even bigger one.

The only people I've really seen talking about Albert to the Chiefs are McShay and Kiper. Of course, those two guys probably have more inside contacts than anyone else does as well. I'm keeping Clady there for now. I think he's a better prospect. I did read a spot from a newspaper's website saying the Chiefs were nuts about Albert, but then it went onto say they wanted him to play on the interior. I disregarded their opinion or "insight" right then. Albert wouldn't be a guard if he's draft at five. Only reason KC would pull the trigger is for him to play OT.

I still think that if this trade is made then the Chiefs will draft Gholston or Long with their pick at No. 5 and then grab the best remaining OT at 17. According to ESPN's Michael Smith, this trade is inevitable. The only hold up is which third round pick is Minnesota going to surrender along with their first.

Here's a link to a story about it in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Star-Tribune.

I've been searching the net and McShay basically said that Kiper had sources that checked out on the Albert pick. I also saw Albert there at another site whom said they have sources.

Now I don't doubt that these guys have sources. I wonder if KC is just letting this slip out so their real draft plans don't get exposed.

This is one thing about the Draft that bothers me. I hate the fact that hype is such a big part of it. Ryan Clady has been considered a much better prospect than Albert for the majority of this draft season. Albert was expected to go in the 20's or later and wasn't even expected to play Tackle, while Clady was projected anywhere from 5th to 8th to 12th. Now all of a sudden Albert is worth the #5 pick over Clady? Why? Has he really done that much to jump up the boards? Has Clady done something to fall? Somebody please fill me in if I'm missing something here.

Albert has impressed in both workouts and interviews. He's insisting he's a LT and not a OG. Also, he did play the position in college. Virginia Head Coach Al Groh moved Albert to LT the final two games of the regular season plus his bowl game to showcase his abilities. Strangely, Albert wasn't on scouting radars and wasn't expected to announce his candidacy as a junior. He only entered at the suggestion of Groh. Groh looks incredibly intelligent for that one.

So scouts got a late start on him. Apparently, since they've started breaking down film on him, they've been incredibly impressed.

He's a prospect that many of us will have to go off of scouting reports and hype to really understand where he'll land. I know I haven't watched film on him. I'm listening to rumor wires to understand his status. I do think that many of the leading draftniks like McShay and particularly Kiper are overrating him and he won't be a top 10 pick.

I guess we find out in six days. Wow, it feels good to type that last sentence.

GOD I HOPE THIS HAPPENS!!! Jared Allen could make the Vikings defense dominant.

And I think this actually indicates that they may be going Matt Ryan with the 5th pick. This gives them to not reach on their first pick, and take the QB, and then comeback and get a player of need at 17 (OT, CB, DE). Remember they do still have Tamba Hali, so DE isn't a huge need even without Allen

I think you can argue that Tamba Hali's success is largely due to Allen's presence and vice versa. It's hard for a single DE with no pass rush presence on the opposite side to consistently produce. Trent Cole in Philly experienced that this season. Julius Peppers has had that issue. I think that still makes DE a big need for KC if they let go of Allen. Also, realize that currently the Chiefs have a grand total of two DEs on their roster -- Allen and Hali. Allen goes and my math tells me that leaves KC with one DE with only Turk McBride, who plays DT, as a potential player to change positions.
