Default Brett Favre Retiring

Hot off the AP wire.

Brett Favre has decided to retire after 17 years in the NFL.

I read a report he was leaning toward it more after this season than in the past. Might as well go out with one of the best seasons of your career. Roger Staubach did a similar thing, although he retired because of concussions.

Now where does Favre rank all time?

I personally don't put him in the top 5, but I think he is probably top 10.

Top 5 for sure in my opinion. I'd put him #3 or #2, maybe #1 but I never saw Johnny U play so I have a hard time ranking a guy like that. Favre is a gunslinger and he had his INT's but when he was on and he was on most of the time, he was kind of ridiculous. The game won't be the same because he was kind of that last great QB from an era. He was by far the most fun player I've ever watched. It's going to be a long day in Green Bay today.

Leave it to Favre to retire after Green Bay makes a deep run in the playoffs.

He was a great QB but I dont know if I would rank him top 5 all time. You also have a couple QB's today that you can make a case that when there career's are done they should be ranked higher then Favre (Brady for sure, Manning we will see). I dont know I would have to think about where I would rank him all time.

I think if anything, this guarantees that Brohm doesn't fall to the 2nd. It could bump Chad Henne into the 1st. However, another possibility is that might create a home for Rex Grossman after 2008.

BTW, for those involved in the Big Ben vs. Sexy Rexy debate last year, I'd like to formally concede defeat. Although Ben threw the ball alot less than other leading QB's this year, he actually carried his team this year.

Sad day for football. He may or may not be top 5. He is probably right on that edge at 5 or 6. He is definitely the toughest football player out there.

Aaron Rodgers is the starting QB in Green Bay next year. I wouldn't put it past the Pack to take a QB but not that early. Maybe in like round 3.

Ok I have been thinking about whether or not Favre is top 5 and have come to the conclusion that he is not. Favre was a great player and is definitley top 10 probably around 7 or 8 but I dont put him in the top 5. He is one of the most exciting players I have ever seen play but he was spotty in big games. Thats not the only reason I dont put in the top 5 but it is one reason.

But like I said he is a great QB and will be in Canton the first time he is elligible.

I disagree with him being spotty in big games. Favre was one of the more clutch QBs in history. His problem is trying to do too much.

Unitas is my No. 1. He revolutionized the position and was the beginning of the modern era QB.

I'd put Montana ahead of Favre as well as Manning and Brady (yes, already). I grade John Elway ahead of him too.

I'd probably rank Favre sixth ahead of Marino, Staubach, Young and Tarkenton.

Elway ahead of Favre? I don't know about that.

I think Favre is probably #2 or #3, definitely top 5

The record that sets him apart IMO is the consecutive game streak.

Elway fits all major and minor criteria, in my opinion. At least to be in the top 5.

I don't like the attitude that puts Unitas at the top. There is nothing anyone can do to supplant him if that is the attitude. Most revolutionary is its own category, and is not the same as best. Most important is another category.

For example, Babe Ruth gets alot of credit as being the "best baseball player ever."
- Ruth was certainly the most era-dominant offensive player ever.

However,
- Ruth did nothing but hit, he was a terrible defender.
- As a pitcher, Ruth is given alot of undue credit, he was an above-average pitcher, not a great one, when compared to his era.

So with that said, the most revolutionary player, since Ruth, was undoubtedly Jackie Robinson, but Robinson is far from the greatest player. To follow a similar theme, guys who were revolutionary and both physically, and statistically dominant, perhaps the most complete player and most era-dominant player since Ruth was Roberto Clemente. Clemente was one of the original "5 tool players" but gets little regard as the "best ever."

If you're criteria for superiority is revolution, there are cop-outs and inarguable statements that will never allow a new "best". I call it "yelling". Its the stuff that can only be backed up with "I don't care what you say, Unitas was the man."

People lose sight of the overall picture, and begin emphasizing semi-arbitrary, or closed minded criteria. Superiority should be determined by a compilation of criteria, not a handful of traditionalist criteria.

Brett Favre is a great quarterback, and incredible story, and after the hiccups at the beginning of his career has become a great role model for several demographics.

Johnny Unitas was far ahead of his time, for sure, however he has never been tested against the equalizers that have presented themselves since his era. He's never seen a zone-blitz, or a defensive lineman who weighed 280 lbs and runs a 4.6. Also, like Ruth, Unitas played in a NFL which wasn't completely racially integrated/tolerant.

Unitas played in a primitive NFL, and while he was far ahead of his time, giving him indefinite entitlement to the #1 spot is a closed minded judgement in my opinion.

The wheel is a great invention, and was well ahead of its time, but as we sit today, as a society, driving cars with engines that burn fuel and use that power to turn much more advanced versions of those wheels, can we really say the wheel is the greatest invention, or invented by the greatest inventor ever?
