Default Turner Officially OFF The Block

The San Diego Chargers have stated they are no longer shopping Michael Turner, and that he WILL be a Charger for the entire upcoming season. I guess no team was willing to pay the enormous asking price

Dumb move IMO. They should have at least gotten something for him. Now they'll lose him after this season and get nothing in return. And I hope nobody on here says Franchise him, any GM who Franchises a backup RB and pays him like a top 5 back when you have a Hall of Famer at the position deserves to be fired on the spot, tossed out of the NFL, and possibly horsewhipped on national television

No he wont be franchised but I have heard AJ Smith say he thinks he'll get a third round compensatory pick if they let him go. Hah!

I'll look for him to be in Green Bay in 2008.

I'm not that dissapointed because the Chargers are going to try and make a serious Super Bowl run this year and they need to save LT for the playoffs. I hope they use Turner more this year because like I said they need to save LT.

^^ just a question, are u ever disappointed in anything the chargers do?

I think they should have accepted the 1st round pick that was apparently offered to them from Tennessee. Yes they will probably get a compensatory 3rd round pick but still they had a chance to get much more for a player who really isn't a huge need player for the team. They could have moved up to pikc #19 and grabbed Meachem or Bowe instead of Craig Davis, and grabbed a Michael Bush or Antonio Pittman in the 3rd round

Ummm...didn't he sign a long term deal? Someone told me he did like five days before the draft. I think that's why he wasn't traded.

He didn't sign a long term deal, I think he had a deal in place with whatever team offered the 2008 1st rounder though.

I completely agree. Turner is overvalued by San Diego's front office, and their fans. Finding a great starting back is hard to do in even the 1st round of the NFL draft. However, finding a back who can spell a starter, eat up some carries, and start if necessary is becoming easier and easier. After much posturing, it is clear that no team in the NFL has as high an opinion of Turner as San Diego's front office. This is a clear failure for A.J. Smith, and is being poorly masked by the PC statements welcoming Turner back, and allowing him to "clear his mind". I'm sure that his mind is alot clearer now that millions of dollars have been taken out of his wallet. What a favor San Diego and their brass have done for him... San Diego should have traded him to whatever team offered a 1st round pick next year, a team which would presumably be picking fairly high next year, as most the teams who really need an RB picked higher than SD this year. Turner could/should make a decent starter, but he won't be a focal point in any good offense. Stealing a 1st rounder would have made Turner a great value, and cemented A.J. Smith's status among the elite GM's in the NFL. Rather than doing that, he is keeping an unproven commodity, who ranks 6th in carries from his OWN DRAFT CLASS*. My point is, that even if Turner were to sign a franchise tender next year, and be traded by the Chargers, his stock could be considerably lower, as poor production will greaty affect his small body of work.

*I'd like to compare Turner to Mewelde Moore. Moore was taken 35 picks before Turner, and like Turner has had very limited carries, while still contributing in the return game.

Mewelde Moore
Career
244 car, 1174 yds, 4.8 ypa, 1 td.
110 rec, 1045 yds, 9.5 ypc, 3 td.
2219 yfs, 4 td's

Michael Turner
Career
157 car, 941 yds, 6.0 ypa, 5 td.
7 rec, 55 yd, 0 td's
996 yfs, 5 td's

And no 1st rounder for Mewelde because....? It's not age, Moore is 5 months younger than Turner. It's not a system thing, because Moore has led his team in YPA for the last 3 years. So whats the difference? Were Turner's 80 carries last year the deciding carries that led SD to a 14-2 record? Unlikely. Maybe it is because despite having great numbers with limited carries, when Moore was actually given a decent amount of carries, which created a much better sample set, Moore had his worst season to date (in terms of ypa, 4.3). So despite averaging at least a half yard more than Minnesota's leading rushers for the last 3 seasons, Moore has been ignored... Why? Because he isn't that good, and neither is Turner. Enjoy the extra gas mileage on LT's legs this year SD fans, but when Tennessee's 1st rounder comes up next year, look at who is on the board...

Here are some more anti-Turner stats. In his 3 highest total rushing yard games, vs. KC '04, Ind '05, and Ten '06, Turner has amassed 338 yards, 36% of his yards. In those games, Turner carried the ball a combined 36 times, 23% of his carries. Why are those games significant? Those teams ranked 28th, 28th and 26th respectively in Defensive Rushing YPA. So, outside of games where Turner gained alot on pourous run defenses, he has 121 carries, 609 yds, for a 5.0 ypa average, a full yard less than his career average. He has had games which surpass that average for a single game, those games have come against the 18th, 28th, 21st, 23rd, 3rd, 2nd, 29th, 19th, and 15th ranked teams in that category, not elite company for the most part.

i am actually disappointed turner is staying in sd becaue i was hoping to see his career really take off. i really think he would be an elite back if he were the starter on pretty much any team (except maybe the texans). i can't wait to see how he does when he gets more carries.
