Default NFL=MLB?

Have any of you ever watched the Barrett Jackson car auctions on the Speed Channel? I occasionally will be up way too late, flip to it, and learn a thing or two about how not to spend my money. I think to myself very often, "That car is fully restored, and looks nice, but $70,000 for a 74 Plymouth Station Wagon?" I had very similar thoughts during the MLB offseason. An offseason where several teams broke the bank for "potential" or for "need" while ignoring the price tag. However, baseball has no hard salary cap, so if an owner is willing keep spending, the price is really inconsequential. In the NFL, by contrast, there is a hard salary cap, and deals like that offered to Nate Clements can cripple a team for several years. Not only will his Base+Bonus eat up a significant chunk of the 49ers cap space for the next 5 seasons, but such crippling will only be compounded if Clements doesn't perform. Also, last season Steve Hutchinson signed a record setting contract for a Guard, but that deal looks like a relative bargain now that Eric Steinbach (the drunk mariner), and Derrick Dockery surpassing Hutch's contract, despite questions about on or off the field discipline. As much as teams try to emulate other successful teams, I would think a few more would attempt to emulate teams who don't pay top dollar for players with major question marks, or who simply don't deserve that type of money.

Once or twice a year someone gets a huge contract. It's no real surprise. You can't put a price on a player a team likes. Baseball is just rediculous. Imagine what the NFL would be like without a salary cap. The Redskins would be the Yankees.

... minus the success in the late 90's, yes. I am not surprised, I am just really beginning to think about becoming a GM. As poorly as money is managed in Baseball and Football, I am starting to think I could do a better job.
