Default DOING THE OPPOSITE - The Blueprint

I got a call this afternoon from a buddy who needed another player for a draft he was holding in two hours... Of course, I accepted. I drew the #9 pick in a 10-team league. The first thing I obviously did was check the settings/scoring. This league was a bit different... 17 rounds, here's the positions: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, WR/TE, WR/RB, TE, D, K, BN(x6). Also realized it was TD-heavy, as TD=6 but 20 yds=1pt instead of the usual 10yds. 4pt=TD pass. So I'm thinking TD guys... Was hoping for Moss or Barber #9, but they went right in front of me.... so instead of gobbling up a bunch of sketchy second-rate runners, I DID THE OPPOSITE. Big Time.

1(9) - Terrell Owens
2(11)- Braylon Edwards
3(29)-T.J. Houshmandzadeh
4(31)-Steve Smith

Yeah, batshit crazy, I know. But I've got an identity and a clear advantage at the WR spot... so why stop?

5(49)-Santonio Holmes

OK, I'm done.

6(51)-Thomas Jones
7(69)-Jonathan Stewart
8(71)-Brett Favre
9(89)-Ricky Williams
10(91)-Kevin Smith
11(109)-Rashard Mendenhall
12(111)-David Garrard
13(129)-Ray Rice

As you can see, I loading up on upside RB's while my opponents are scrambling for STARTING wr's, the likes of: Shaun McDonald, Amani Toomer, D.J. Hackett, Donte Stallworth. Yeah, they're all slated in starting spots right now. I just need two of these guys to "pop."

14(131)-Matt Schaub
15(149)-Nate Kaeding
16(151)-Kevin Boss
17(169)-Arizona

Here's my lineup (once Smith comes back; I'll plug a RB 'til then):

QB: Brett Favre
RB: Thomas Jones
RB: Jonathan Stewart
WR: Terrell Owens
WR: Braylon Edwards
WR: Steve Smith
WR/TE: T.J. Houshmandzadeh
WR/RB: Santonio Holmes
TE: Kevin Boss
D: Arizona
K: Nate Kaeding

BN: Rashard Mendenhall
BN: Kevin Smith
BN: Ricky Williams
BN: Ray Rice
BN: Matt Schaub
BN: David Garrard

I've ton a ton of drafts... I really really like the way this one turned out. You traditionalists will hate it, but the simple fact is that the league has become a passing league and running back committees have watered down the RB spot. I am STACKED at WR, that much is obvious. I have
below average QB's, but if I rotate them right I'll be fine. It's one spot. My RB's are very deep, with some big upside. I need 2 of the 6 to blow up and I'm golden. I really like my chances of at least two of them being big-time this year. Even if they're average I'm fine. I put of TE way too long. I'll rotate from the waiver wire weekly. Was really upset when Scheffler went a pick before me. Kaeding is a kicker. Arizona plays Chicago week one, and I'll rotate this weekly depending on matchups as well.

What are your thoughts? Completely unconventional, but my WR crew will be coming in waves all year, and if the backs can be serviceable I'll look like a genius. I'm really looking forward to this team/strategy, and I'm only out $30 if it blows up on me.

I like this teams depth at wr. Specially since you can start 5. Jones will have atleast 1000 yds and 6-7 tds. Your other rb's are unknown but like you said lots of upside. So you'll only need 1 to step up. Te end will prolly hurt you, but your wr's will carry you. Between Farve and Garrad you'll be fine there.

I like your strat here, specially in a scoring system that heavily favors TD's. B/w Favre/Garrard/Shaub you should be fine at QB. Arizona is a very underrated Defense this year to, I think you will be fine there, specially in weeks one and two where the cards match-up with ATL and MIA. ANd if one or 2 of those rookie RB's break-out then your team will be very tough this season.

way to implement the george contanza strategy! nice strategy for a td heavy league that plays so many wrs. tjones in 6th is ridiculous value and, while not stellar, should be consistent. ur backup rbs have great potential and should serve nicely if u play matchups. overall ballzy draft but nj for your league parameters.

Wow... didn't expect the positive response, i expected to get ripped... another indication of the movement towards DOING THE OPPOSITE!!! Everyone's doing the opposite now, so it's almost coming full circle, as I've had to do the OPPOSITE OF THE OPPOSITE in a couple other drafts where big time RB's are falling into the 3rd-4th rounds...

onetwo you referenced Constanza.... savvy reference on your part. The George Constanza strategy is blowing up in fantasy circles....

I will agree with everyone else. I like the draft. It certainly is different. You have great depth at WR. The best part is that you can start them. I would be really interested to see how you finish the year.
