Default ACC Preview

ACC Atlantic
Clemson – 11-2 (6-2)
Because of the weakness of the ACC, Clemson could actually end up contending for the BCS Championship game. Any semblance of consistency on defense could lead the Tigers to an undefeated season.

Florida St. – 7-5 (5-3)
There’s a ton of talent defensively, but you have to be able to score points in college football. Antone Smith is a good RB, but lacks an OL to run behind.

NC State – 6-6 (4-4)
The biggest sleeper in the conference. Could end up being Clemson’s biggest challenge in the division.

Maryland – 6-6 (3-5)
It’s been difficult to see why the Terps consistently contend in the ACC over the last two years. They simply play well enough to compete and to win.

Boston College – 6-6 (2-6)
BC will take the biggest step back in the conference. It won’t be surprising at all if they end up falling short of bowl eligibility.

Wake Forest – 3-9 (1-7)
Wake Forest has one of the best secondaries in the country. Unfortunately, the Demon Deacons play in a run-heavy conference. Their biggest scoring threat offensively is kicker Sam Swank. That’s not a good thing.

ACC Coastal

Virginia Tech – 11-2 (7-1)
The Hokies have a fairly favorable schedule with trips to Miami and Florida State proving to be the toughest challenges. Defensively, Va. Tech is always great. There are far too many questions for the offense, though.

Miami – 8-4 (6-2)
Speaking of favorable schedules, the Canes have very winnable away games other than the one that has them going to Gainesville to play the Gators Week 2.

Virginia – 7-5 (5-3)
Many say Virginia is ready to slip off from a surprising 2007 season. Personally, I think the Cavaliers have a fantastic defense, particularly in the front-7. Expect an improved offensive attack with RB Mikell Simpson playing a larger role.

North Carolina – 6-6 (4-4)
Butch Davis’ presence is already making a difference as UNC pulled one of its best recruiting classes since Mack Brown was the team’s skipper. The Tar Heels will struggle early, but will be a different team by season’s end. They’re a year away from being an ACC contender.

Georgia Tech – 6-6 (3-5)
Can the triple option still work? It can in the ACC this year. It is a scheme change, however, and it will take a while for the Yellowjackets to adjust.

Duke – 2-10 (0-8)
Typical Duke team with a typical Duke record. Not much else to say.

Overall assessment: Clemson and Virginia Tech are a level above the rest of the conference and I like Clemson to win the ACC crown.

No defense in the country will consistently stop the Clemson offense. QB Cullen Harper really came on late last year and is the best QB in the nation in my opinion. Throw in lethal RB tandem James Davis and C.J. Spiller and you get an offense ready to score a lot of points.

The Tigers have a national championship caliber offense. Now if their defense can just make some key stops.

Miami is a lot closer to returning to national dominance than Florida State is. There’s younger and better talent in Miami, but either squad could emerge this season with 10 wins based on the quality of the ACC.

Frankly, it’s the worst major conference in the nation. I project all but two teams earning bowl eligibility, but it reflects the lack of strength within the league.

All-ACC 1st Team

Offense

QB Cullen Harper Clemson
There's little doubt about Harper being the top passer in the conference. The bigger question is whether or not he's the best in the country.

RB James Davis Clemson
Currently, the best senior RB prospect for next year's draft.

RB C.J. Spiller Clemson
Combines with Davis to create the nation's top running game.

WR Aaron Kelly Clemson
A big play threat able to keep defenses honest.

WR Darius Heyward-Bey Maryland
One of the ACC's best playmakers.

WR Greg Carr Florida St.
All-American talent. This is the season he has to start living up to the tag.

TE Ryan Purvis Boston College
BC's best player.

OL Eugene Monroe Virginia
Hype building around Monroe as the best OT in the nation.Virginia has a good rep of developing top OL lately. Think D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Branden Albert.

OL Sergio Render Va. Tech
Now the Hokies need to find a back to run behind him.

OL Thomas Austin Clemson
An unsung hero of Clemson's offensive success.

OL Rodney Hudson Florida St.
Strange to see a Seminole on this list, considering recent history. He needs help around him, though.

OL Ed Wang Va. Tech
Put the Jokes about his last name aside for a minute. Very athletic tackle converted from tight end.

K Sam Swank Wake Forest
The nation's best.

Defense

DE Michael Johnson Ga. Tech
Combination of size and athleticism that is rare. Production isn't impressive, though.

DT B.J. Raji Boston College
Didn't play in 2007 because of academics. Returns with lots of promise and new attitude.

DT Vance Walker Ga. Tech
Led Tech with 8.5 sacks and 14 TFLs.

DE Eric Moncur Miami
5.5 sacks as a junior.

LB Clint Sintim Virginia
Overlooked because of Chris Long last season. Now the team's best defensive player.

LB Antonio Appleby Virginia
Leader of conference's top rush defense.

LB Jon Copper Virginia
Led team in tackles two straight seasons.

LB Aaron Curry Wake Forest
Team's best player and possibly country's best linebacker.

CB Alphonso Smith Wake Forest
Considered one of the nation's best corners.

S Chris Clemons Clemson
Team's third-leading tackler.

S Michael Hamlin Clemson
80 tackles. 4 INTs. Team captain.

CB Victor Harris Va. Tech
Almost entered the draft in 2008. Says his goal is to win the Heisman.

P Brent Bowden Va. Tech
Set team record for punts last year. Not really something for the team to brag about.

All-ACC 2nd Team

Offense

QB Sean Glennon Va. Tech
Yes. This is how thin the conference is at QB.

RB Andre Brown NC State
Waiting for him to have a break out season.

RB Javarris James Miami
Cousin of Edgerrin. Edge says his little cousin is more talented than him.

WR Tyler Grisham Clemson
Just another weapon for Harper to utilize.

WR Demaryius Thomas Ga. Tech
Put him on the list based on talent. Who knows how much he'll be used in the new triple option system.

WR Hakeem Nicks North Carolina
Could become a star in Davis' system.

TE Brian Linthicum Clemson
Very underrated player.

OL Will Barker Virginia
UVa knows how to produce good OL.

OL Jason Fox Miami

OL Matt Tennant Boston College

OL Orlando Franklin Miami
Along with Fox, creating running lanes for James.

OL Garrett Reynolds North Carolina

K Mark Buchholz Clemson

Defense

DE Ricky Sapp Clemson
He's not Gaines Adams, but he's not too shabby either.

DT Darryl Richard Ga. Tech
Ga. Tech has a lot of ability in its interior DL.

DT Alan Michael-Cash NC State
NC State has a good tradition of producing DL.

DE Everette Brown Florida St.

LB Mark Herzlich Boston College

LB Quan Sturdivant North Carolina

LB Orion Martin Va. Tech

LB Adrian Moten Maryland

CB Patrick Robinson Florida St.

S Kam Chancellor Va. Tech

S Myron Rolle Florida St.

CB Kevin Barnes Maryland

P Jimmy Maners Clemson
