Default Porky's Playoff System

Based on the current BCS Standings

A 4 Team playoff would look like this

1. Missouri vs. 4. Georgia

2. West Virginia vs. 3. Ohio State

If the season ended today Missouri would play West Virginia for the National Title.

With all due respect to Missouri and West Virginia, I actually think Georgia would beat Missouri if they played.

Now look at an 8 team playoff system if the season ended today.

1. Missouri vs. 8 USC

2. West Virginia vs. 7. LSU

I would pick against 1 and 2 in this game.

3. Ohio State vs. 6. Virginia Tech

4. Georgia vs. 5. Kansas

I'd probably pick Ohio State and Georgia.

Which gives you Georgia vs. USC and Ohio State vs. LSU in the semis.

I don't know about you guys but Georgia vs. USC is a game I'd want to see.

It's crazy that some people believe this season is the reason why we need a BCS.

OK, to make your system true to life, you'll have to take out the Big 10 teams since they'll never sign on to the change. But, since this is hypothetical I'll let it slide.

Why is it crazy that some people think this season is the reason a playoff is needed? I've been in favor of a playoff for years, but this season is the perfect example of why one is needed.

I think for a playoff system to even get approved that the major conferences will still have to get an auto bid. I also don't think the amount of teams in the BCS would be diminished. I think 10 teams would still be included rather than eight, giving the top two seed byes.

I could see some of the guidelines being followed as well including a max of only two teams from a conference being allowed in. Anyone realize that Florida is screwed out of the BCS this year. They'd be an at-large team and I think most would like to have a Heisman winner in the BCS. But Georgia will be getting an at-large bid and either LSU or Tennessee will also get in with the SEC championship. Sorry Gators.

BTW, great point Black!

I think he was saying its crazy that people don't think its necessary to have a playoff because of how this season has gone... I'm pretty sure he's for a playoff...

Why not give each major conferance an auto bid? Their usually represented in the top 10 and BCS bowls anyway...

How would a 10 team bracket work out anyway? You'd have to give the top 6 teams (conferance champions) byes.... If you just give the top 2 seeds byes you end up with 6 teams, which means only 3 quarterfinal games... The 4 at larges would have to do a couple qualifier games or am I missing something?

----------- 1_______

------------3_______-------------------------------------1_______

------------5_______-----------3_______
7_______-------------5______------------2_______
------------7_______-----------2_______
10______-------------2______

(I know its difficult to look at but its the best I could do)

Personally, I'd like to see them go to a 12 team playoff and give the top 4 seeds byes, just like the NFL... I'd also like to see them expand the number of allowed teams / conference to 3 (BTW you probably remember Buffs, but last year WISC got the shaft last year even though they went 11-1 with their only loss to a top 10 MICH team, so I don't really feel so bad for FL)... So this year it would look like this...

1 Mizzou
bye

8 LSU
9 OU

5 VT
12 Hawaii

4 UG
bye
--------------------------------------------------------------------
3 OSU
bye

6 USC
11 BC

7 Kansas
10 Florida

2 WV
bye

Yes. You're right. I worked it wrong in my head. I know Porky is for a playoff. I just don't understand his point with that sentence.

10 or 12 teams is what I prefer as well. I thought the NCAA was moving much closer to a playoff system a couple years ago, but now I'm not too sure. Everything is stalling.

Every year you can make an argument for a playoff system. And plus i like the idea of upsets instead of one stupid bowl game for each team. Look at the college basketball tournament and how exciting that is each year with a couple huge first round upsets. Whatever it is that is holding them back they should really find a way to figure it out.

There are people out there that feel this is the reason why the BCS is needed in college football. John Saunders for one.

I think 10 teams is to big. I don't think college football wants that many games in a year. I for one would probably go with a +4 formula because it's just one extra game and it allows the schedules to basically remain the same. A +8 formula is 2 extra games and a +10 can bring it up to 3 depending on what teams advances.

If your getting that far into the system then teams would have to drop a non conference game a year. Maybe 2. Also you have to factor in that Big 12, SEC, and ACC all have Championship games. The Big Ten, Big East, and Pac 10 doesn't.

The Gators are in the same position that Wisconsin was in last year. Michigan and Ohio State went to the BCS but the Badgers missed out due to the rule of only 2 teams from a conference. Instead Notre Dame went to the Sugar Bowl.

Also if Missouri or West Virginia loses it bumps Ohio State up to the National Title and Illinois probably goes to the Rose Bowl. Think about that for a second. Illinois gets in before a lot of deserving teams.

Hell, let's just have a "December Madness".

The top 64 teams play.

I really think you'd need to stick teams that actually won their conference ahead of those that didn't, but just my two sense. I really don't see a playoff happening in the near future. What I think would make the most sense would be the whole plus one thing, just make the BCS Title game that "plus one", it means 2 less teams make the BCS, but we're looking at some 3 loss team(s) making the BCS.

I thought that too when I was filling it out... I thought it was necessary, but then again, the basketball tourney doesn't do it that way and I think it actually would be more competetive to do it this way...
