Best Mock Draft 2 rounds
Trades are at the Bottom. My brother made this, NOT me.
ROUND ONE
Team Selection Position/School
1. [b]San Francisco Aaron Rodgers QB/Cal
While other players in this draft are better overall prospects, SF is somewhat forced into selecting a QB. They settle on the one who claims Joe Montana to be his most favorite player in Aaron Rodgers.
2. San Diego* Braylon Edwards WR/Michigan
Almost a complete team, Edwards most certainly is an upgrade over any receiver they currently have. The offense of Brees, Tomlinson, and Edwards will be difficult for defenses to stop.
3. Cleveland Alex Smith QB/Utah
While they traded for Trent Dilfer, he is not the long-term answer. With Smith, the Browns get a QB for the future who can learn for a year or two.
4. Chicago Mike Williams WR/U.S.C.
Yes, they got Mushin Muhammad earlier in the off-season, but he is pretty old, and Mike Williams will bring fresh blood into the equation and give Rex Grossman another big target.
5. Tampa Bay Ronnie Brown RB/Auburn
Tampa Bay would like to get a solid compliment to Clayton, but RB is a need for this team, and Ronnie Brown is the type of player who will fit well for Gruden's style of Offense. Plus both of the top WR's are already off the board.
6. Tennessee Antrel Rolle CB/Miami (Fl.)
After getting out of cap trouble by releasing key veterans, the Titans would love to get out of having to pay a player as much as the #6 slot pays. They lost both starting CB's though, so Rolle will be an instant starter who will look to help the Titans D.
7. Minnesota Derrick Johnson LB/Texas
This off-season has been good and bad for the Vikes. They've improved their D by making it look like the Buffalo Bills's D from 4 years ago (Pat Williams, Ted Cottrell, Sam Cowart), and they simply can't pass up on Johnson. If Taylor (WR) plays well for the Vikes, this will be a tough team to stop, both Offensively and Defensively.
8. Arizona Adam Jones CB/West Virginia
The Cardinals would have liked to get one of the top QB's, but are relegated to either taking a CB or a RB. Like the Titans, the Cardinals have perhaps the weakest set of CB's in the league. After trading Starks to the Pats, the Cardinals need to address CB early, as they can (and will as you will see) select a RB later in the draft or trade for one.
9. Washington Troy Williamson WR/South Carolina
The Redskins could go either way here. They could select Rodgers (CB), but they will instead address the Offensive side of the ball. They traded for Moss earlier, but they are looking to disperse of Gardner. Williamson will be a solid second option for Ramsey.
10. Kansas City** Carlos Rodgers CB/Auburn
After working the trade with Detroit, KC lands one of the top 3 CB's in the draft and improves their D. This won't be the last D pick KC makes though.
11. Dallas Shawn Merriman LB|DE/Maryland
Now that they are switching to the 3-4, Dallas feels that Merriman could perform as a solid LB in their system. With the trade for Howard nearly complete, Dallas will have one of the top units in the league.
12. Miami* Carnell Williams RB/Auburn
Miami can't believe it's luck. After trading down to acquire more picks with San Diego, Miami still got it's chance to choose from two of the top three RB's in the draft. Miami now has its QB and RB of the future, and can now sit comfortably until the 3rd Round.
13. Houston Alex Barron OT/Florida St.
No surpirse here. They could look to the D secondary here, but it was evident how much Houston wants to protect Carr's blindside when they went after Pace, so Barron will be a solid starter and will be a stalwart on the line for years.
14. Carolina Cedric Benson RB/Texas
Davis is old and trying to come back from an injury while Foster, who showed signs of greatness, hasn't been healthy since college. Benson could go in the top 10, so the Panthers are very happy to land him.
15. Detroit** David Pollack DE/Georgia
Detroit was able to trade down and stockpile picks while still getting the player they wanted. It came down to three: Pollack, James, and Spears. Obviously Detroit felt Pollack would better fit its system and is a welcome addition to the franchise.
16. New Orleans Thomas Davis LB|S/ Georgia
New Orleans must be scratching it's head at Jonathan Sullivan after drafting him #6, but they make a solid selection in drafting Davis, who should be able to help out their secondary as a SS.
17. Cincinatti Travis Johnson DT/Florida St.
Other than Houston, this pick I'm just about as sure of. Lewis will gladly welcome Johnson, who will be a factor in stopping the run.
18. Minnesota Jamaal Brown OT/Oklahoma
Minnesota's other need is on the offensive line. Brown could end up playing either as a Guard or a Tackle with the Vikings.
19. St. Louis Khalif Barnes OT/Washington
After the Kyle Turley incident, St. Louis is going to be looking for a new Tackle, and Barnes is someone that is the type of player Mike Martz loves.
20. Seattle*** Marcus Spears DE/LSU
Seattle has many defensive needs, so they will need all the draft picks they can get. But when they saw Spears continue to drop, Dallas was willing to move down. Seattle didn't give up too much, but they sure got a lot in Spears, who will be a nice wingman for Grant Wistrom.
21. Jacksonville Erasmus James DE/Wisconsin
Jacksonville has had problems finding quality Defensive ends, but James should be someone who can help out their problem.
22. Baltimore Elton Brown OG/Virginia
Not one of Baltimore's Offensive linemen is below the age of 30, so Brown will slowly be worked into the starting lineup.
23. Dallas*** Mark Clayton WR/Oklahoma
Dallas gained an additional 3rd Rounder in the trade-down with Seattle, and they were also was able to land their target in Clayton, who will give Drew Bledsoe another option (if he hasn't thrown it to the other team's CB by then.)
24. Green Bay Josh Bullocks S/Nebraska
Green Bay would have liked to draft the heir apparent to Brett Farve, but they'll either have to wait until the second round, or select one in next year's draft. With Bullocks though, the Packers are able to help out a secondary that is still recovering from the loss of Sharper to the Vikings.
25. Pittsburgh**** Heath Miller TE/Virginia
Pittsburgh got lucky last year when a top player fell to them at pick 11, and this year they get lucky again when a top TE falls due to an injury. Pittsburgh moves ahead of the Jets to make sure they are able to land the top TE in the draft.
26. New York Jets Justin Miller CB/Clemson
The Jets would have liked to land Heath Miller, but instead get help in their secondary with the other Miller, Justin. The Jets could select a DE or DT to replace Ferguson or Abraham (if he's traded), but go with a need right now.
27. Atlanta Dan Cody DE/Oklahoma
Atlanta's D last year improved dramatically in the 4-3. Dan Cody will be brough in to replace Jasper, who became a free agent. A solid choice that will give Atlanta one of the best Defensive fronts in the league.
28. San Diego Matt Roth DE/Iowa
San Diego already has drafted a WR, so now they address a Defensive need in DE. This is definitely a position that the Chargers should upgrade, and Matt Roth will most likely start here as a rookie.
29. Indianapolis Shaun Cody DT/USC
Pick almost any Defensive position, and the Colts could draft that position. The Colts have had no problem putting points on the board, the only problem is, sometimes they put points on the board for their opponents. Cody is someone who will improve the inside of the Colts D-line, and will create pressure on the pocket, something Dungy hasn't ha since he had Warren Sapp in Tampa Bay.
30. Denver**** Demarcus Ware DE/Troy
Trevor Pryce is on the block and could be moved before the draft. In addition, they lost another solid end in Hayward. With the team switching to a 3-4, Ware could play either end or linebacker for the Colts.
31. Philadelphia Kevin Burnett LB/Tennessee
With Wayne and Reese out of the picture, they could use some depth at the position, and Burnett will be able to fill in when needed.
32. New England Marlin Jackson CB/Michigan
With the potential loss of Bruschi this year, New England could look to select a LB here. However, they will most likely select a CB, seeing as they had to use a WR to fill in last year. A decent pick that will help the Pats secondary.
Round Two
33. San Francisco Fabian Washington CB/Nebraska
34. Cleveland Anttaj Hawthorne DT/Wisconsin
35. Philadelphia Roddy Wright WR/UAB
36. Tampa Bay Channing Crowder LB/Florida St.
37. Tennessee Roscoe Parrish WR/Miami (Fl.)
38. Oakland Barret Ruud LB/Nebraska
39. Chicago J.J. Arrington RB/Cal
40. New Orleans Jason Campbell QB/Auburn
41. Detroit Justin Tuck DE/Notre Dame
42. Denver (TRADE w/DAL) Brodney Pool S/Oklahoma
43. New York Giants Daryl Blackstock LB/Virginia
44. Buffalo (TRADE w/ARZ) Bryant McFadden CB/Florida St.
45. Carolina Mike Patterson DT/USC
46. Kansas City Jerome Mathis WR/Hampton
47. Houston Odell Thurman LB/Georgia
48. Cincinatti Ernest Shazor S/Michigan
49. Minnesota Mike Nugent K/Ohio St.
50. St. Louis Marcus Johnson G|T/Mississippi
51. Green Bay David Baas G/Michigan
52. Jacksonville Eric Shelton RB/Louisville
53. Baltimore Eric Green CB/Virginia Tech
54. Green Bay (TRADE w/SEA) Brandon Browner CB|S/Oregon St.
55. Arizona (TRADE w/BUF) Ronald Bartell CB/Howard
56. Denver Andrew Walter QB/Arizona St.
57.New York Jets Alex Smith TE/Stanford
58. Seattle (TRADE w/GB) Krik Morrison LB/San Diego St.
59. Atlanta Craphonso Thorpe WR/Florida St.
60. Indianapolis Atiyyah Ellison DT/Missouri
61. Miami (TRADE w/SD) Antonio Perkins CB/Oklahoma
62. Pittsburgh Adam Terry OT/Syracuse
63. Philadelphia Courtney Roby WR/Indiana
64. New England Robert McCune LB/Louisville
Projected Trades:
1. * San Diego Trades: QB Phillip Rivers, 12th Overall Pick (1st), 61st Overall Pick (2nd), 2006 2nd Round Pick
to
Miami for: CB Patrick Surtain, 2nd Overall Pick (1st), 138th Overall Pick (5th Round)
Reason for Trade: The Chargers would very much like one of the top two receivers in the draft. They don't want to pay a WR #1 money, so they instead will pay Edwards #2 money while also landing a solid CB who will help out against Randy Moss. The Dolphins do this trade because they want more picks to rebuild, while also landing their QB of the future in Rivers.
-----+++++-----
** Kansas City Trades: 15th Overall Pick (1st), 116th Overall Pick (4th), 2006 2nd Round Pick
to
Detroit for: 10th Overall Pick (1st), 184th (6th)
Reason for Trade: After seeing the top two CB's go quickly off the board, Kansas City decides that they will actually attempt to draft D high. They are able to improve the Defense with one of the top 3 CB's in the draft. They do this trade after losing out on Surtain. Detroit agreed to the trade because they want to move down and stockpile more picks. In addition, they felt they could still get the guy they wanted at 15, which they will.
-----+++++-----
***Seattle trades: 23th Overall Pick (1st), 85th Overall Pick (3rd)
to
Dallas for: 20th Overall Pick (1st), 148th Overall Pick, (5th)
Reason for Trade: Dallas has made it known that they would like to trade down from the pick they received from the Bills in the JP Losman trade. After seeing Spears drop so far down, Seattle works the phones seeking a partner to move up to secure a solid DE. Dallas now gets more picks while not having to leave the1st Round this year.
-----+++++------
****Pittsburgh trades: 30th Overall Pick (1st), 131st Overall Pick (4th Round)
to
Denver for: 25th Overall Pick (1st)
Reason for Trade: While Heath Miller continued to slide in the draft, it appeared that the Jets were just about ready to select him. Lacking a quality TE for years, Pittsburgh is willing to give a 4th to the Broncos to move ahead of the Jets and secure the best TE in the draft.
<-----><-----><----->
Other Trades Not involving First Round Picks
<-----><-----><----->
Arizona Trades: OT LJ Shelton, 44th Overall Pick (2nd)
to
Buffalo for: RB Travis Henry, 55th Overall Pick (2nd)
Reason for Trade: Arizona reluctantly gives in to the Bills by swapping 2nds in addition to the player-for-player trade. Arizona has other needs that they wish to cover, but feel that Travis Henry can be their premier back. The Bills meanwhile, land a quality LT who can fill in for the loss of Jonas Jennings at a reasonable salary.
-----+++++-----
Oakland trades: CB Charles Woodson, 182nd Overall Pick (6th)
to
New Orleans for: DE Darren Howard
Reason for Trade: Oakland wins the sweapstakes for the services of Darren Howard by giving New Orleans Charles Woodson. It came down to Dallas and Oakland, but Dallas wasn't willing to give up Dat Nyugen.
-----+++++-----
Indianapolis trades: RB Edgerrin James
to
Chicago for: 106th Overall Pick (4th), Conditional 2006 2nd Round Pick (If James rushes for more than 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns, Colts receive 1st Round Pick instead)
Reason for Trade: The new Bears O-Coordinator has said that he wants a power back for his new offense, and they feel that James is a definite upgrade than Jones at RB. While Chicago does not want to give it's second round pick this year, they feel that James won't match the terms needed to increase the pick to a 1st rounder, but with him on the team, the 2nd rounder will be closer to the 3rd round than the 1st. Indianapolis feels that they can still get a good enough back later in the 2nd to compliment the passing attack that Manning and the Colts have.
-----+++++-----
Dallas trades: 42nd Overall Pick (2nd), 2006 2nd Round Pick
to
Denver for: DE Tevor Pryce
Reason for Trade: After losing out on the sweepstakes for Howard, Dallas is able to close a deal with Denver that would send Pryce to Dallas for a set of 2nd's. Denver was hoping to move up higher in the 1st by packaging their 1st and Pryce, but when both Dallas and Oakland were attempting to trade for Howard (for less), no team came to talk. While neither Denver nor Dallas were able to work out the trades that they wanted to, each team is somewhat happy: Dallas to have an experienced and productive DE; Denver having two 2nd's.
-----+++++-----
Green Bay trades: 58th Overall Pick (2nd), 143rd Overall Pick (5th)
to
Seattle for: 54th Overall Pick (2nd)
Reason for trade: Green Bay gives up an additional 5th to move ahead of Arizona who they feel will take a second CB.
