2005 NFL MOCK DRAFT
Hey, thanks for looking at my 1st mock draft. I am 15 and my dream is to be the next Mel Kiper. Replies and comments on what you think would be great. Thanks guys, M.J.
2005 NFL MOCK DRAFT BY: M.J.
1. San Francisco 49ers - Aaron Rodgers, QB California | Rodgers to many people is the best QB coming into the draft. I am not one of them. This years draft is alot weaker then last year skill wise, and there arent too many 1st round QB's except for Rodgers and Alex Smith. If San Francisco gets this talented QB then Rashaun Woods (a WR taken by the 49ers 1st round last year) will have a breakout season. Alot of people dont realize that Rodgers has such good arm strength. Remember Rodgers completed his first 13 passes against USC this year. Not drafting a QB, and keeping Tim Rattay and Ken Dorsey= ANOTHER 2-14 SEASON. RODGERS GRADE: A
2. Arizona Cardinals (From Miami) - Derrick Johnson, LB Texas | The Cardinals are in need of anything they can get at this point. Their offense isnt great but when you have a guy like Larry Fitzgerald on your team they better have some good air attack stats from Josh McCown (or John Navarre). Arizona will trade up and give Miami their #8 pick, their 2nd round pick, and their 5th round pick. They need Derrick Johnson on their team, he is the next Ray Lewis in my eyes. JOHNSON GRADE: A+
3. Cleveland Browns - Antrel Rolle, CB Miami (FL) | Cleveland... oh man, another losing season. It seems like they always end up having a top 10 pick. They could use help at numerous positions but their CB play has to improve if they are going to compete in the AFC. Rolle is a stud, simply stated. He has the speed and size to be a lockdown corner. There is no way that Cleveland would pass on Rolle. Believe me. ROLLE GRADE: A+
4. Chicago Bears - Braylon Edwards, WR Michigan | Rex Grossman is talented, he has done a great job with nothing in Chicago. He has NO targets there and they need a WR threat if they are going to win the very tough NFC NORTH. Braylon is going to be a franchise player and he makes CB's sweat when he lines up. His speed, size, and hands are everything you can want in a WR. EDWARDS GRADE: A+
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Ronnie Brown, RB Auburn | Tampa Bays running game is pathetic, and thats putting it in a nice way. They lost Charlie Garner last year with an injury and they lost Michael Pittman with some legal issues. Ronnie Brown has everything a RB needs in the NFL today. He has speed, size, and he can make people miss while running a few over. BROWN GRADE: A-
6. Tennessee Titans - Alex Barron, OT Florida State | Tennessee has two needs. One, they need a CB opposite of Andre Woolfolk because I dont think Samari Rolle will be in Tennessee next year. Two, They need some definite help on the offensive line. Alex Barron is the best OT in the draft, and if they get him Chris Brown will have a monsterous year on the ground. I think they will end up taking care of the CB issue in the 2nd round with Antonio Perkins from Oklahoma. BARRON GRADE: A
7. Oakland Raiders - Alex Smith, QB Utah | Rich Gannon is not the MVP he was a few years ago and Kerry Collins isnt a very effective passer. Its time for Norv Turner to have an offense that can score. In my opinion Alex Smith has an edge over Aaron Rogers because he has more precise field vision and leads his receivers better. That makes Smith the best QB in the draft. Oakland has many needs but I have a feeling that Alex Smith is the next Ben Roethlisberger. SMITH GRADE: A
8. Miami Dolphins (From Arizona) - Cedric Benson, RB Texas | The Dolphins are a good team and just had a bad year because of the random retirement of Ricky Williams. They have a good defense but they are needing the running game back that they were known for having the last few years. Just hope this back out of Texas doesnt have and addiction to pot. Miami will receive Arizona's 2nd round and 5th round selection for trading down. BENSON GRADE: A
9. Washington Redskins - Mike Williams, WR USC | Washington is a team to look out for next year. They have good players at almost every position and probably would have made the playoffs if it was not for starting Mark Brunell in the first few games. But now there sure that Patrick Ramsey will be there future at QB, so now that the QB spot is fixed they need to improve their WR play. They do have above-average WR's in Coles and Gardner but Ramsey needs an amazing WR like Mike Williams. Williams brings alot to the table. He has Size, good speed, and he doesnt drop many passes. Braylon Edwards status has increased making Williams the 2nd best WR in the draft. Thats why he drops this far. WILLIAMS GRADE: A-
10. Detroit Lions - Pac-Man Jones, CB West Virginia | Detroits offense is not the problem here. Next year they will have a healthy Roy Williams and Charles Rogers at WR, plus the workhorse in the backfield by the name of Kevin Jones. But there defense... now thats a different story. They do have one CB that they can rely in with Dre Bly. But they need someone to play opposite of him. Pac-Man Jones is AMAZING. He is a "lock down" cornerback and he is a hard hitter. Dallas could trade up to Washington though because they are chasing Jones also. JONES GRADE: A-
11. Dallas Cowboys - Erasmus James, DE Wisconsin | Dallas is in desperate need of a "lock down" CB, probably the most needy team of a CB going into the draft. We know Rolle will be gone by #11 but what about Pac-Man Jones? Detroit wants Jones also. Do they trade up to Washington and give them their #11 pick and possibly their 2nd or 3rd round pick? I think its a major possibility. Because after Jones is gone who is left. Carlos Rogers, Marlin Jackson, Justin Miller, and Corey Webster. I dont think any of them are worth the #11 pick in the draft so if they dont trade up they will take care of their pass rush trouble opposite Greg Ellis. He has been asking for a DE that can take a load of his shoulders for years now. Wiley came in receiving a big contract and did nothing. So they will take the best DE in Erasmus James the standout from Wisconsin. JAMES GRADE: B+
12. San Diego Chargers (From NYG) - Shawne Merriman, LB Maryland | San Diego is coming off a great year in which they made it to the playoffs, and Marty Shottenheimer is coming off a deserved Coach Of the Year Award. On offense they are set with Brees, Tomlinson, and Gates starting to become a terrific duo. Now they need to work on there defensive play. They really havent has a Pro-Bowl LB since Junior Seau left to the Dolphins in free agency. Merriman could be that guy, he is hard hitting and quick to the ball. MERRIMAN GRADE: B
13. Houston Texans - Anttaj Hawthorne, DT Wisconsin | Houston is desperate for that guy who stops everything through the middle. Hawthorne fits right in, he is a big guy and is very strong. He is the best DT in this draft. He would be a great selection for them since Seth Payne just doesnt get the job done. HAWTHORNE GRADE: B
14. Carolina Panthers - Jammal Brown, OT Oklahoma | Stephen Davis, DeShaun Foster, and Nick Goings? WOW. Simpley put Carolina has the most talented threesome of RB's in the NFL today. Jammal Brown the stud OT from Oklahoma would be a walk-on and make the o-line even stronger than what it already is. In some people eyes he is a better OT than Alex Barron and DBrickashaw Ferguson. I am one of those believers, I had seen him play his college career at Oklahoma and he was simply amazing. You hardly ever saw a guy get past him, and he had his share of pancakes as well. BROWN GRADE: A-
15. Kansas City Chiefs - Carlos Rogers, CB Auburn | Even my little sister knows why the Chiefs dont win... DEFENSE. What I didnt understand was why last year Dick Vermeil let go his defensive coordinator but none of his defensive players. He didnt change a thing on defense, he didnt sign a veteran on defense or even try to get a player that would impact the defense for that matter. So I am positive they will go with defense this year. They have a need a CB mostly though, so thats why they will go with the best CB left on the board Rogers. He could very well be that impact player. ROGERS GRADE: B+
16. New Orleans Saints - Channing Crowder, LB Florida | The Saints LB\'s arent something to be proud of Saints fans. I am sure you have already discovered that though. Channing Crowder is actually a tremendous football player and he plays the game with intensity. His status has been lowered because of some off the field trouble he got into but this guy is a real steal. He is a guy who after you get hit by him you take a few seconds to get up. CROWDER GRADE: B
17. Cincinnati Bengals - Thomas Davis, S Georgia | The bengals are in need of a franchise S. Thats why picking Thomas Davis will be a good decision if Marvin Lewis decides to go that way. Davis is a guy that can play coverage if needed , and is alot like Roy Williams in the way he hits. Ernest Shazor is a good S also, but Davis is better overall. Cincinnati could also use some more help on the o-line but that can wait for the second round. Lets just face it Rogers Beckett is a bust, and there will probably still be good OG's on the board by the Bengals second round selection. SHAZOR GRADE: B
18. Minnesota Vikings - Dan Cody, DE Oklahoma | Lets take a look at both sides of the ball for Minnesota. Offensive rank: 4th in NFL (2nd in NFC), defensive rank: 28th in NFL (15th in NFC). Whoa! I dont know about you but those rankings are lopsided and make the Vikings D look bad, and there not lying either. If you have ever seen this horrendous Vikings defense then you will agree with me, their biggest need is a DE where they had no pass rush at all. Their two starting DE's in Kenechi Udeze and Lance Johnstone combined for only 16 sacks and 11 of them were Johnstone's. That wont get it done if your in the tough NFC NORTH. So they could really use the fiery and intensive player from Oklahoma. Cody makes offensive lineman nervous when he looks at them. Atleast 15 sacks a year while at Oklahoma? That is ridicously good, and he has a ravenous appetite for QB's. Cody in my eyes is the best DE entering the draft. CODY GRADE: A-
19. St. Louis Rams - Marlin Jackson, CB Michigan | The Rams would be back to one of the best teams in the NFL if they can just strenghen their CB's. Jackson has an edge over Webster from LSU because he is quicker and sticks to the WR assigned to him. Jerametrius Butler is the best CB on the Rams and he is just and average NFL cornerback. They also need to improve their group of linebackers where Tommy Polley is their best LB but I think Ahmad Brooks LB from Virginia will be on the board still with there 2nd round selection. JACKSON GRADE: B
20. Dallas Cowboys (From Buffalo) - Mark Clayton, WR Oklahoma | They will address their need at WR here since there is only one remaining CB left that is honorable of being a 1st round pick and he is not someone that you want to get in front of Clayton. Bill Parcells has been talking about how they need more talent at the WR position since Keyshawn Johnson and Terry Glenn are aging. Johnsons (33) stats have been on the decline the last few years and we can only guess they will go south some more. Terry Glenn (30) was Dallas' key target last year for Testaverde until he broke his leg in week 6. Thats when emerging star Jason Witten a TE who we knew could catch, starting showing he is a leader. But unfortunatlety we cant throw to him every 3 plays and if Julius Jones keeps having 30 carry games he wont be around long. So I say trade away Quincy Morgan (WR that they received from Cleveland Browns for Antonio Bryant) and get a 3rd round pick because Bryant was on the rise and we got a "nobody" for him. But to make a long story short Clayton was the main reason Jason White won the Heisman in 2003 and he showed America that he catches everything that comes his way in the Senior Bowl. Then in the second round Dallas can take care of their CB needs. Like the tuna said "I am not going to draft high on a CB." CLAYTON GRADE: A-
21. Jacksonville Jaguars - Corey Webster, CB LSU | Webster is the last CB WORTHY of being drafted in the 1st round. He is an talented CB with terrific size, and is quick. The Jaguars need is for sure at CB. Rashean Mathis, Juran Bolden, and Dewayne Washington are not star CB's in the NFL, and thats why they need help there. Offenses attacked the Jaguars weak CB's week in and week out. Webster was a standout a LSU and won himself a National Championship in 2003. WEBSTER GRADE: B+
22. Baltimore Ravens - Troy Williamson, WR South Carolina | This guy is someone not many people have heard of. He is WR who's name didnt get mentioned alot because his greats stats went unnoticed. He is the FASTEST WR in the draft and has excellent hands. He may not be the biggest WR but its not always about size. If Kyle Boller wants to succeed then he needs someone else to throw to besides TE Todd Heap. They also need a healthy Jamal Lewis so they can have a running game as well. There defense is amazing and their offense could be also if Williamson ends up being the WR they need. WILLIAMSON GRADE: A-
23. Seattle Seahawks - Travis Johnson, DT Florida St. | This guy is the best DT coming into the draft in my book. Analysts say that Anttaj Hawthorne has an edge over Johnson but thats proposterous and he made Florida State what their defense is today. Seattle needs a DT badly, I mean there starting DT right now is a guy by the name of Cedric Woodward. Who?... you ask. Exactlty. JOHNSON GRADE: B+
24. Green Bay Packers - Justin Miller, CB Clemson | Ever since Mike McKenzie had his "issues" and left Green Bay to go to New Orleans their defense just hasnt been the same. Al Harris is a young talented CB but he cant stop the offense from scoring by himself. Miller in my opinion left to early, and should of stayed his senior year at Clemson. The Pack also have a need at QB where its just about time for future Hall of Famer Brett Favre to throw in the towel. They will shoot for QB Charlie Frye from Akron if he is still available. MILLER GRADE: B-
25. Denver Broncos - Shaun Cody, DT USC | Denver needs help up front of the d-line. Trevor Pryce has led the team in sacks the last couple of years and its time for someone to help him out. Cody won 2 national championships while at USC, and he put up good numbers all four years there. He has good size at 6'4'' 289, and his speed is actually suprising for a DT his size. He could make a big difference on this team. CODY GRADE: B-
26. New York Jets - Elton Brown, OG Virginia | Except for C Kevin Mawae, the Jets have a weakness on the offenseive line. Brown was a standout at Viriginia and one of the more known OG/OT's in the nation. He has fenominal size at 6'6'' 333, and amazing strength. He was one of the elite players in college football. He can give RB Curtis Martin a boost with his improvement to the Jets o-line. BROWN GRADE: B
27. Atlanta Falcons - Taylor Stubblefield, WR Purdue | Can you spell underrated? Stubblefield does not get the credit he deserves. He isnt the biggest or fastest in the draft but he is definatley one of the most talented. If Vick wants to compete in the NFC then he needs more targets to throw to. Yes, TE Alge Crumpler is very good and Vick's go to guy but thats not enough. Peerless Price was brought in from Buffalo a few years back but has done nothing to show that he is the WR they were looking for. Stubblefield was Kyle Ortons key target all four years at Purdue. STUBBLEFIELD GRADE: B
28. San Diego Chargers - David Baas, OG, Michigan | Can LaDainian Tomlinson get any better than he already is? Yes, the Chargers offensive line is WEAK, and if strength is added with David Baas then the workhorse in the backfield from a little known college of the Texas Christian University horned frogs will be even more explosive, and be in open field more. Baas makes wide holes for his RB's to run through and is strong and hard to move. BAAS GRADE: B-
29. Indianapolis Colts - Carnell Williams, RB Auburn | Why do I have the most talented and explosive offense in the NFL taking a RB when they have Edgerrin James? James will be a free agent because his contract is coming to an end and they wont have enough money to extend his contract because all their money is going to Manning, Harrison, and Freeney. So they will be left with no talent at RB so taking "Cadillac" would be smart here. It would be a shame if Williams falls this far but there arent that many teams in need of a RB this year. Williams is speedy, tough, and breaks defenders ankles. WILLIAMS GRADE: A
30. Pittsburgh Steelers - Michael Boley, LB Southern Mississippi | This is another guy alot of people have not heard of. Some analysts actually ranked him higher than Derrick Johnson from Texas. The Steelers win games with there defense and Boley would boost their LB corp. He wasnt noticed alot because he was not from a very big school and it was in a weaker conference, but he is NFL material and could be a star. Boley could end up being a steal in the draft because his status isnt that high. He has what it takes to accel in the NFL. BOLEY GRADE: B+
31. Philadelphia Eagles - Matt Roth, DE Iowa | Eagles dont have that many spots to upgrade but DE could be better alongside Jevon Kearse. Roth and Kearse would make a terrific pass rushing duo and if they were together there would be alot of hits on the QB, sacks, and pressure for the quarteback to get the ball away which turns into interceptions. I think Roth is better than Pollack thats why I put him getting drafted before Pollack. Roth brings speed, size, and a spectacular pass rush to the table. ROTH GRADE: B
32. New England Patriots - David Pollack, DE Georgia | Patriots have hardly any needs but could upgrade their DE's since they dont have someone to play opposite of Richar Seymour. Pollack was a standout at Georgia where he earned All-American honors. He has good speed and will make the Patriots defense even better than what it is. They could go for a WR here to give Brady even more targets to throw to but there isnt a WR left worthy of drafting this high. Roddy White from UAB, or Craphonso Thorpe from Florida State would be a good WR choice in the 2nd round. POLLACK GRADE: B
