Saint's Combine Mock
Ok, I wanted to wait til after the combine to put this out, but I'm bored today, and have nothing better to do. I may make some changes come Wednesday when it's all said and done, but I don't think it'll be anything drastic.
Here it is, 2 rounds, short descriptions for round 1.
Round 1
1. DET - Matt Stafford, QB Georgia
Aaron Curry or Jason Smith are safer picks here, but something tells me it'll be QB. Stafford's big arm is going to have scouts drooling over him.
2. STL - Aaron Curry, LB Wake Forest
Everyone is mention how the Rams wanted to draft Jake Long last year. Well there is a new coach in this year, and Curry is not only the best player in this draft, he's the kind of player I think Steve Spagnola would love.
3. KC - Michael Crabtree, WR Texas Tech.
Crabtree's stock could be falling based on his injury, however, I think theirs enough tape on the kid to show how talented he really is. KC goes BPA over need here.
4. SEA - Jason Smith, OT Baylor
Smith pushed himself into the #1 tackle spot at the combine. With Crabtree gone here, OT is the obvious choice for the Seahawks.
5. CLE - Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB Texas
Cleveland needs to add a pass rusher, and there is no better one in this draft than Or'sack'po. Orakpo can play in a 3-4 or 4-3, so he's flexible enough to fit Rob Ryan's scheme, which I think will be more of a hybrid than he ran in Oakland.
6. CIN - Andre Smith, OT Alabama
Smith's starting to fall because of character and attitude concerns. But since when did Cincinnati care about character and attitude? As long as Smith doesn't blow his pro day as badly as he blew the Combine, he still has a chance to go this high.
7. OAK - Michael Oher, OT Ole Miss.
While Jason Smith rocketed his value, and Andre Smith hurt his, Oher is doing a nice job of just solidifying his. He's clearly ahead of Eugene Monroe now, and could easily beat out Andre Smith with big performances here on out.
8. JAX - Jeremy Maclin, WR Missouri
He didn't have a blazing 40 time, but he didn't do anything to hurt himself today. He still has plenty value here at #8 for the Jags.
9. GB - BJ Raji, DT Boston College
Raji is doing a great job of changing my opinion of him. I saw him being interviewed today on NFLNet, and he was more mature than I expected. Not only is he BPA, but fits GBs 3-4 scheme well, as he can be moved between NT and DE.
10. SF - Aaron Maybin, OLB Penn St.
I thought San Fran would be going QB no matter what, but Mike Singletary seems confident in Shaun Hill for what ever reason. They could use a OLB opposite Manny Lawson very badly, so Maybin is a good fit here.
11. BUF - Everette Brown, DE Florida St.
I've had this pick penciled in since day one, and I see no reason to change it now.
12. DEN - Rey Maualuga, LB USC
Denver's biggest problem is their linebacking corps. They still haven't been able to find a MLB to replace Al Wilson, but with 2 very good MLBs available in this draft, they can have their pick.
13. WAS - Eugene Monroe, OT Virginia
Monroe didn't do anything to hurt his stock, but he also didn't do much to help it. With Oher and Jason Smith moving up draft boards, Monroe could see his stock drop a bit.
14. NO - Malcolm Jenkins, CB Ohio St.
Jenkins falling to #14 seems even more believable now that Nnamdi Asomugha was resigned by Oakland.
15. HOU - Robert Ayers, DE Tennessee
Ayers has been rocketing up boards as of late, and although some may think this is a bit high now, I think it won't be long before he's widely regarded as a top 20 prospect.
16. SD - Chris Wells, RB Ohio St.
Wells had the best broad jump of any RB at the combine, which shows his power and explosion. Even if LT isn't traded, his time on San Diego is short, and Wells makes a nice complement to the shifty Darren Sproles
17. NYJ - Alphonso Smith, CB Wake Forest
The Jets are apparently looking CB this draft, for a player to start opposite Darelle Revis. Although Vontae Davis will probably light up the combine, Alphonso Smith is quietly moving up draft boards as a much safer pick. Mark Sanchez would be very tempting here as well.
18. CHI - Peria Jerry, DT Ole Miss.
Chicago could use a WR here, but #18 is too high for anyone not named Maclin or Crabtree. Jerry is a great value pick here, and gives them a nice option beside Tommie Harris, and should add some much needed pass rush.
19. TB - Mark Sanchez, QB USC
Sanchez's drop ends here. Tampa has already made it clear they will not resign Jeff Garcia, so drafting a QB early to compete with Luke McCown makes a lot of sense.
20. DET (via DAL) - James Laurinaitis, LB Ohio St.
Detroit only has one LB who should be starting at this level in Ernie Sims. MLB has been a need that Detroit has not addressed for a long time, and with Laurinaitis still on the board, it makes all the sense in the world to nab him.
21. PHI - Knowshon Moreno, RB Georgia
The Eagles could loose Corell Buckhalter this offseason, so it could use a RB to spell Brian Westbrook. Moreno is BPA here.
22. MIN - DJ Moore, CB Vanderbilt
Minnesota likely would make an attempt to trade up if Sanchez were to fall past the Jets at 17, but I don't predict trades in my mock, so the Vikings go option #2. Moore has value as Antoine Winfield's eventual replacement, and in the return game, something Minni really needs help with.
23. NE - Sean Smith, DB Utah
New England seems to always get underrated gems in the 1st round. Depending on how Smith does in the 40, he could be groomed at safety or corner, but New England has needs at both, so he's a great fit here.
24. ATL - Louis Delmas, S Western Michigan
Delmas is a clone of Bob Sanders. With Lawyer Milloy on his way out, Atlanta has could use someone to replace him.
25. MIA - Larry English, DE/OLB Northern Illinois
English is one of my favorite players in this whole draft. He has the flexibility to play at LB in a 3-4, or DE in a 4-3. He could even play LB in a 4-3 if given the opportunity, so he's a good fit for Miami's hybrid defense.
26. BAL - Vontae Davis, CB Illinois
Baltimore surprisingly let Chris McAlister go, and is rumored to also be cutting Samari Rolle. That leaves a gaping hole at CB, and with Vontae Davis still on the board, the Ravens would be crazy to pass him up.
27. IND - LeSean McCoy, RB Pitt
I was disappointed McCoy didn't perform at the combine, but it shouldn't hurt his stock. Indy's run game was non-existent last year, so adding a back to help out Joseph Addai is needed.
28. PHI (via CAR) - Brandon Pettigrew TE Oklahoma St.
I personally think Pettigrew's stock should be able to survive through a relatively lack luster combine. So this would be good value for Philli at this point. If however it does end up hurting him, the Eagles could go with William Beatty, Brian Cushing or Jared Cook here.
29. NYG - Brian Cushing, LB USC
I'm not as big of a Cushing fan as everyone else seems to be. I still think there's a legitimate chance he falls to the Giants. Although that opinion could change after tomorrow.
30. TEN - Percy Harvin, WR Florida
I'm not a Harvin fan, he's too raw for me to take a chance on in the first. But I do realize someone will be willing to do it, and since Tennessee has so few needs, they could be the prime candidate.
31. ARI - Alex Mack, C Cal
Arizona's O-line has gotten much better over the Whisenhunt era. It's really only a good center away from being one of the better in the league.
32. PIT - William Beatty, OT Connecticut
Pittsburgh really needs to upgrade it's oline, and Beatty is the best olineman available. Although one could argue that he doesn't quite fit in Pittsburgh's scheme.

I'll just comment on round 1 since thats all i have mocked out so far.
Im interested as to what the something is that tells u detroit will go qb... got any sources? I honestly can't see them passing on curry or smith, theyre too good.
Another guy who likes crabtree to KC, nice. I like it, but to tell u the truth i dont have it projected in the next mock. Like cubbs, i beleive u build from the trenches out, and i have raji there right now, although dont let n e one tell u crabtree doesnt make sense, it does. its this foot injury that was prob my swing factor.
I really beleive maybin will b the pick for cleveland. Heres the deal with maybin, orakpo, and brown. Maybin is 250, brown 255. Orakpo is between 265 and 270. Maybin fits only the 3-4, and the same for brown IMO. Brown is real short for a 4-3 de at 6'2", and I can definately see him standing up as a florida state fan who watched him all the time. Orakpo IMO is a 4-3 guy. Can he do a 3-4? yea probably, but its my beleif he's better suited for the 4-3. He's heavy enough if he plays at 270 and he put up over 30 reps, plenty of strength. The way I think itll work out is maybin at 5, brown at 9 to GB who goes to the 3-4, and orakpo at 12 to Buffalo. Those are the best fits i beleive, although green bay could grab orakpo, as i beleive he's better than brown. In that case, don't be surprised to see the bills trade out, as i don't think they want maybin or brown, its orakpo or nuthing for them.
I think andre smith has dropped himself to tackle number 4 behind smith monroe and oher, and so id swap him and monroe in your mock. He looks out of shape, his proday will b huge.
Ayers has first round potential IMO, but not top 15. If anyone jumps into the top 15 I think its Larry english. Like orakpo, I beleive he's not as much of a tweener as people think. I think his pass rushing skills are best used as a 4-3 de who could really bring it, plus he's bigger than most people thought at 274, he's got the size. I'd slot him in at 15 over ayers.
SD won't go rb. Even with LT issues, they franchised sproles and he'll be the guy wen LT can't go for now. RB will probably end up being drafted, just later. Look for a DE, OT, or LB in their spot.
The jets would go vontae davis over alphonso smith. I've read on a couple sites and the star ledger that they are real into vontae davis. I actually think they take him over mark sanchez, who i also have to TB btw... nice spot for him.
Moreno doesn't fit in philly. They need a big power back, a between the tackles rumbler. Although moreno weighed in at around 215 and put up 25 reps, he's a finesse runner. Beanie wells is the only rb they would take in the first, but they could grab shonn greene in the second.
I would go NUTS if Cushing came back to jersey and played for the giants, but I highly doubt he falls there. He's going to wow at the combine, and don't b surprised if he's gone by pick 12 to denver.
solid mock.

I actually like the Knowshon pick a lot. I think Beanie Wells proved something today... He's my top back now. I think that Knowshon is the do-everything rb that Philly covets, and that while losing Buckhalter is a blow, the team hasn't used him a lot, and has a lot of success since Duce Staley's departure.
I dig the Rashad Jennings pick to the Cards in the 2nd round. As a Seahawks fan I hope it doesn't happen, but it makes sense, as I also think that Shonn Greene has left my first round, perhaps falling to the 5th or 6th back off the board.

Vontae Davis is way to low to me. He's the second best corner in the draft on my board and may even propel ahead of Jenkins. I think V.Davis could go as high as #12 to Denver.

The Chargers could still easilly go RB, although I think they would go Moreno over Wells because he fits what Turner does better. Tomlinson is on his last legs and if the Chargers don't pick up a top RB this year they will have to next year. As much as I love Tomlinson the fact is he is 30 and has carried the ball almost as much as anyone at his age. I think Moreno would be a steal at 16 and if Rey is gone he will probably be the choice.

Davis is a complete measurables guy, and even at that, he didn't blow up the combine as much as I expected. He's way to inconsistent for my liking. Alphonso Smith and Sean Smith were the most impressive players on the DB day in almost everything. And as far as DJ Moore going ahead of him, Minnesota's rumored to be targeting A. Smith and Moore, and they fit their scheme a lot better.
Of course all it takes is someone to fall in love with his athleticism and take a chance on him higher, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him drop. Right now he's the #4b corner on my board, with Jenkins, Alphonso, Sean Smith, ahead of him and DJ Moore #4a

The Jets appear to be that team that falls in love with Davis...
