My First 09 Mock
Heres my first draft for the 2009 NFL Draft. I’ll be honest in that I haven’t been keeping up with who has declared and who hasn’t so…………..sue me.
1. Detroit Lions- Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia- You have Calvin Johnson. Now get somebody to throw him the ball not named Daunte Culpepper.
2. St. Louis Rams- Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss- Their line was horrible. Bulger was “skittish” back there because of it. Oher is a good building block.
3. Kansas City Chiefs- Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma- I think this pick depends on what happens with Matt Cassel. The Chiefs may or may not be looking for a new head coach. If they do, McDaniel’s could be a candidate and if that happens Cassel could be a Chief. If that happens then Bradford obviously isn’t a Chief. I don’t like predicting trades so I’ll just keep the Bradford pick here.
4. Seattle Seahawks- Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State- They need a CB/Safety and Jenkins is the best available at either position. I have heard WR could be an option but they have spent a lot of money on the WR position in the past.
5. Cleveland Browns- Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest- This pick depends on who the Head Coach is. Curry is fast and good in coverage.
6. Cincinnati Bengals- Andre Smith, OT, Alabama- They could go RB with this pick but why pass up on a good O-Lineman like Smith?
7. Oakland Raiders- Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech- Al Davis loves the “sexy pick”. Russell, McFadden, and Crabtree could set the table for a soon to be explosive Offense.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars- Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia- It’s no secret that their line was beat up this year. Monroe will help them out.
9. Green Bay Packers- Brian Orakapo, DE, Texas- This pick is a steal. Orakapo is a beast and is very versatile. I really expect him to be very impressive at the NFL combine as well. It’s possible he could jump into the top 5.
10. San Francisco 49ers-Taylor Mays, S, USC- The 49ers need help in a lot of positions Safety being one of them and since I have Smith, Monroe, and Oher off the board by this pick I say they go Safety. Mays is a first team All-American at USC.
11. Buffalo Bills- Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma- If the Bills want Trent Edwards to be their QB then they better get used to the Check down receiver. Gresham will help their Offense out a ton.
12. Denver Broncos- Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia- Denver has a horrible defense but they don’t have a RB either. With Shanahan gone I see them finally solidifying this spot with Moreno who I like over Wells.
13. Washington Redskins- Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma- This pick might be a stretch here but teams sometimes “reach” for O-lineman. The Redskins could go guard or tackle but I think Robinson is the best one of the group that is left.
14. New Orleans Saints- Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois- They have an explosive offense, their average against the run but where they really struggle is against the pass. Davis should help.
15. Houston Texans- William Moore, S, Missouri- I think Dunta Robinson is going to be leaving via FA. That leaves a big hole in an average secondary to begin with. They could go CB here but I don’t think anyone of that caliber warrants being picked here. They could go by biggest need though.
16. San Diego Chargers- Ray Mauluanga, LB, USC- I like this fit here with this team. He is clearly a steal as I don’t see why teams like the Saints (Vilma is expected to resign) and the Texans (Ryan) need him.
17. New York Jets- Jeremy Macklin, WR, Missouri- The Jets need a WR with game breaking abilities. I’m holding out hope for Boldin lol but I don’t see it happening.
18. Chicago Bears- DJ Moore, CB, Vanderbilt- There a very overrated defense. There either really good or really bad. DJ Moore probably is a late first rounder but I think they need help at this position and I like Moore a lot. I could see them going QB but who are they going to take? Tebow?
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Sen’Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn- I heard Cody wasn’t coming out early. That leaves Marks as the best available. This is another team that needs a QB but I will hold off on the Tebow pick because I do think he is going to stay in school. He would be a good fit here though imo.
20. Detroit (Via Dallas)- Ciron Black, OT, LSU- They draft Stafford to get the ball to Johnson. Now draft somebody to help make that happen.
21. Arizona Cardinals- Chris Wells, RB, OSU- Edge is old and wants out, Hightower is slow, and Arrington isn’t much of anything. They lack a good running game. Adding Wells is only going to make things easier for their Wide Receivers.
22. Philadelphia Eagles- Jason Smith, OT, Baylor- The Eagles need help on that O-Line even more then they need it at WR. Runyan is getting old and Smith is a guy who could step in as a potential replacement.
23. Minnesota Vikings- Sean Witherspoon, LB, Missouri- Witherspoon is a tackling machine. I think they could go secondary with this pick as well.
24. New England Patriots- Clint Sintim, LB, Virginia- This is another team that could go either secondary or LB here. But with Brushchi and Vrabel on the back end of their careers paring Sintim with Thomas and Mayo is a good fit. It doesn’t hurt that Sintim played 3-4 LB with Virginia either.
25. Atlanta Falcons- Trevard Lindley, CB, Kentucky- I was thinking about putting a Safety like Chung or Greene here but I think there happy with Eric Coleman’s play this year. I think they definitely go secondary with this pick though.
26. Miami Dolphins- James Laurinitus, LB, OSU- I have him dropping but his stock has dropped some. He definitely doesn’t have the buzz around him that he did last year. The Dolphins are not expected to bring back Crowder, Porter is getting up there and Ayodele didn’t impress. They could use another LB.
27. Baltimore Ravens- Percy Harvin, WR, Florida- Mason is getting old and Clayton is just ok. Harvin gives them good speed and I really like him over Heyward-bey.
28. Philadelphia Eagles- Courtney Greene, S, Rutgers- I think this is a guy who is going to shoot up draft boards. He had an average season but I just have a good feeling about him.
29. Tennessee Titans- Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland- Justin Gage is a solid player but he needs some help out there. Vince Young is going to be given his chance soon enough and I think the best way to help him out is to put him the best position to be successful on Offense. That means giving him weapons to throw to.
30. Pittsburgh Steelers- Herman Johnson, OG, LSU- The Steelers need help on the O-Line. Specifically at the guard position. They could trade down to take a guy like Johnson who at this point in time I don’t rate as a first round pick but as I said earlier I don’t like to predict trades.
31. Indianapolis Colts- Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss- The Colts are poor against the run. They need help there and Jerry could be a nice late first round pick.
32. New York Giants- Brian Cushing, LB, USC- Linebacker is probably the Giants only real weakness. Cushing is very versatile and has the ability to be a Defensive end or an OLB. That’s a nice weapon to have for this Giants defense.

There are a few guys I like a lot in your mock, but I don't think they're currently first-round picks.
Sen'Derrick Marks is one of them. He's my favorite DT in this draft. He's got some questions to answer before he gets a first round grade though.
Also, I do like Courtney Greene, but his speed will keep him out of the first round.
Lol. It's Maualuga. I don't know what you spelled, but I'm pretty sure it's a curse word in Samoan.
Brian Cushing has never played DE, and although he has the size to play it at times, he probably never will.
Sean Weatherspoon isn't a first round pick. Brandon Spikes rates well ahead of him. So does Mark Herzlich.

Matt Stafford is the most overrated prospect in this draft IMO. I think he's the No. 3 QB prospect behind Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez and truthfully I rather go with an offensive lineman and pick up Rhett Bomar, Josh Freeman, or Nate Davis in round 2. Stafford does have all the talent in the world, but he never produces like he should and he had the privilege of playing with Georgia's talent. He's also a turnover machine and you can't have that in today's NFL.
and that is why the Lions probably will take him
Michael Oher is boom or bust. He's dominate when he wants to be, but he seems to not want to be all the time. Andre Smith is the first lineman off the board. He's just way to good and this whole mess with the agent isn't going to scare teams. Nobody will care much once they realize he'll follow in the path that Joe Thomas, Jake Long, and Ryan Clady have set.
I expect Oher to drop in the draft quite a bit. I think Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe are better prospects.
Anyone falling is possible for the most part, but I think Seattle is going to grab Michael Crabtree immediately. Not only is he a top five player in my opinion, but they have a huge need at receiver. They were starting Courtney Taylor and had to sign Koren Robinson off the streets this year.
I could see them trading back for a tackle or linebacker though.
Chris Wells is big and fast. I think he's the No. 1 back if he comes out. Injuries are a concern, but he's not hurt now and that's the most important thing.
LeSean McCoy should probably be on there somewhere unless I missed him. He has first round talent and all the tools. I actually think Moreno and Wells are gone by the time the Cardinals pick so McCoy to Arizona makes sense baring a trade up.
Duke Robinson being that high is something I don't agree with. He literally will take games off at times it seems like. The guy is inconsistent and I much rather draft Alex Mack and convert him to guard.
I think if the Bears go secondary, they'll take a safety. I think they're strong at corner with Tillman and Vasher are healthy. I was going to say DT for them, but Anthony Adams really played well at the end of the year so we'll see.
I would be doing somersaults (If I could) if the Packers got Brian Orakpo. I actually think they need a pass rusher as much as a run stuffer.

If the Lions take a QB I think it would be Bradford over Stafford, pending Senior Bowl and Combine results
I would be stunned if the Seahawks passed on Crabtree. At this early point I think thats one of the biggest no-brainers
Normally I would say no 1st round RB for Denver, but Shanahan is gone. Moreno in Denver is a scary thought, assuming they continue their trdiation of running the ball well without Shanny
Percy Harvin to Baltimore is another pretty common pick that I like. It makes sense
Pretty good job overall, there were a lot of picks that I liked and made sense
