Draft Day Trades (Post your ideas too)
Draft Day Trades
I think there are several opportunities in this year’s draft for several trades to occur. Let’s see what could be in store on April 25.
Cleveland trades down:
With Seattle picking 4, it is very possible that 2 OT’s are gone by pick 4. Some teams like Jacksonville, San Francisco or Buffalo may feel pressed to reach for whomever they have as the #3 OT on their board. Though this is not a likely move because the 4 OT, whether it be Andre Smith or Michael Oher would possibly be available anyway. Either way, a team may feel pressed to move up with Cleveland to ensure they are able to acquire a possible franchise tackle.
Oakland trades down:
If Stafford goes #1 as many think he will, there will be a higher demand for QB Mark Sanchez. Oakland picks just before Jacksonville, San Francisco, Denver and Washington who pick 8, 10, 12 and 13 respectively. Oakland sliding down could also mean that Jeremy Maclin slides, as well as the rest of the WR class.
Denver trades up from #12
Though I don’t personally like the idea of Denver moving up, but it may be possible if they want to ensure they will get Sanchez.
Buffalo trades down
Someone may feel pressed to move up to pick #11 in front of Denver to ensure they are able to draft Sanchez. Obviously the possibility of Denver of Buffalo trading up or down respectively depends on if anyone wants to jump up to where Oakland picks. Buffalo could also potentially deal Jason Peters, which could add another dimension to this draft. If Buffalo can get a first round pick for Peters, then Buffalo may want to sit with the 11th pick and take the highest ranked OT on their board.
San Diego trade down
Again, it’s all about what type of signals that the Jets, and Broncos for that matter put out about their interest in a QB. The Jets at 17, Broncos at 18, the Buccaneers at 19, and even the Lions at #20 could all be looking for a QB. San Diego will likely find themselves in a great situation to acquire more picks. This trade could be as simple as any team picking 17-20 exchanging first round picks and adding a third to complete the move.
What does most of the draft day trades hinge on? Mark Sanchez and Josh Freeman. Both QB’s will be taken in the first round due to the command of teams needing a QB. I think we could see a lot of shuffling going on for teams to properly place themselves in order to get one. I think it’s also very, very possible that Sanchez and Freeman go in back to back picks. Once Sanchez is drafted, there could be a flurry of teams wanting to trade up to the next pick to take Freeman. This happened in the 2006 draft. Leinart was drated by the Cardinals at #10. Then Broncos immediately traded up to #11 with the Rams and took Jay Cutler. I expect the very same could happen this draft.
The impact this could have might just result in all three QB’s being taken in the top 10. Again, this is unlikely but possible. This also means that Green Bay could be involved in some trade talks if Sanchez goes #8.
I can’t wait to watch and see!
