Default Curry out of conversation for Lions?

There has been plenty of conversation about the Lions looking towards Aaron Curry No. 1 overall. Some draftniks are projecting the selection.

The chances of that happening took a big hit today. The Lions acquired Julian Peterson from the Seahawks for DT Cory Redding and a fifth round pick.

I really like the move by the Lions. I think Peterson is a high-impact playmaker and addresses a huge need.

I think it does take Curry out of the equation, leaving Matt Stafford and Jason Smith as potential selections. I'd personally throw B.J. Raji's name back into the conversation as well, but the Lions aren't thinking like I am. They're meeting with Stafford, which I think is a huge mistake. The new staff is sacrificing their jobs quickly with that move in my opinion. I'd easily go Smith or Raji over Stafford.

Seattle also picks up a solid player at a need position as well. Redding has been a bit disappointing the last two seasons, but he hasn't exactly had a lot of help on the DL, either. I think he could shine in a new atmosphere. I do think B.J. Raji remains possible for Seattle if he's still available.

I agree this throws Curry out of question for the Lions. They could still use him at MLB I guess, but I think that's very unlikely. Stafford is looking more and more like the pick the closer we get. However this pick also makes Raji more likely to the lions, and DT a huge need, likely addressed within the first 3 picks.

I think the chances of Raji to the Seahawks are very low now too. They signed Colin Cole to a starters salary, now have Redding, and still have Brandon Mebane and Red Bryant on the roster. It's not totally out of the picture, especially if Jason Smith is off the board, but I think their starting to tip their hands to drafting a OT.

As for the trade itself, I think it was good on both parts. Peterson can be a dominant player, however he had a down year this year, and apparently fell off with the team. A new scenario could be just what he needs, and he definitely fills a huge hole for the Lions.

And Redding is a solid starting DT, nothing special, but a good player to have. Plus they get the extra pick.

Good trade on both parts IMO
