Heisman Watch |
|
|
As we approach the final lap in the 2007 Heisman race things begin to start to unfold. For one we have 3 legit candidates for the Heisman Trophy for probably the first time all season. That much is finally clear.
This entire year has been full of surprises so I wouldn’t give the trophy to just one player yet even though I’m sticking to the bandwagon that I was driving back in September.
One thing to look at is that only 1 of the big candidates is actually playing this weekend. Chase Daniels has quietly found his way into my top 3. He has been under the radar this entire season. Sure I’ve known of his great statistics and I thought as him maybe as a dark horse but I have to be honest, I didn’t take him to serious.
It’s time I admit I was wrong. While Daniels is not going to be #1 on my list below, he is going into this weekend with the ability to win the Heisman Trophy if he plays his best game against Oklahoma. In a season that has been full of surprises, it’s certainly not out of the question he wins the Heisman on a big performance this Saturday night.
After all most voters buy into hype. They’ll remember the most recent event rather than the course of the entire season. Unfortunately for Tebow and McFadden, the ball is in Daniels corner. I won’t say he controls his own destiny but he’s either going up or down in my opinion.
1. Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
I said it back in September that Tebow was my frontrunner. I briefly gave Dennis Dixon the #1 spot on my watch but I didn’t give up hope. I stuck with Tebow and I’m going to probably stick with him up until the presentation. I think without question he has been the most consistent player and the most valuable player to his team this year. Consistency being the dagger to Darren McFadden.
Tebow has not had a poor game this season. Try and find one awful performance by Tim Tebow. You won’t because he hasn’t had one. He’s the best player in college football. This is all my opinion but the stats are amazing. 51 total touchdowns on the season with only 6 interceptions. He’s the first player in the history of college football with 20+ passing and rushing touchdowns. There hasn’t been any sophomore to win the Heisman yet but Tebow might make more history if he becomes the 1st.
2. Chase Daniels, QB, Missouri
Under the radar all season long. It’s quite fitting that Chase Daniels reflects his team like that. Maybe it’s the other way around. That doesn’t matter any longer. What does matter is Daniels has 33 touchdowns and 3,951 passing yards on the season. Most importantly Missouri controls their destiny in making the BCS National Championship.
It’s going to take a huge game but I wouldn’t say anything is impossible after watching this season. Missouri is legit and Daniels is as well.
3. Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
McFadden is a great player. Probably the best NFL Draft prospect coming out next season. A better pro prospect than Reggie Bush. He deserves all that recognition but his inconsistency might be what keeps him from winning the Heisman.
McFadden’s 206 yard game against #1 LSU was legendary. His SEC record of 321 yards against South Carolina was out of this world but what I can’t get out of my head is the numbers 43, 61, and 88. Those are his rushing numbers against the likes of Auburn, Florida International, and Mississippi State. McFadden has been great but not 51 total touchdowns great.
4. Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
Matt Ryan has fallen off the radar just a little bit. After what appeared to be a dream season for Boston College and Matt Ryan, the hype is gone. The ACC Championship game is this Saturday and Boston College is in it. In fact I think their going to win.
Ryan has nearly 4,000 yards passing and 28 touchdowns. People bring up his 3 interceptions against Florida State but remember Colt Brennan had 5 against Idaho and some people feel he’s the most deserving of the Heisman.
5. Pat White, QB, West Virginia
I like Pat White. I thought he was out of it. I had him done and in the books and he’s still a unlikely winner of the Heisman. In fact I’d be shock to see him finish in the top 3. With that said, he’s done enough to earn some recognition. West Virginia is probably going to play in the National Title and Pat White is a big reason why.
White has 1,498 passing yards and 12 touchdowns. That goes with his 1,144 yards and 14 touchdowns. He’s not quite Tim Tebow but his team might be playing for a National Title and he’s one of the biggest reasons why.
On the Bubble
Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii - 3,732 passing yards, 33 touchdown passes, and 14 interceptions. |
