Heisman Watch |
|
|
Nobody is safe this season in college football. 2 of the top 5 ranked teams in college football went down this weekend. As expected, Wisconsin stumbled against Illinois. The Badgers were underdogs going into the game even though they were ranked 5th and had the longest winning streak in college football, but it was clear that they had a lot of problems, especially on defense. P.J. Hill was hanging on by a thread in the Heisman Race and that thread just may of snapped.
An unexpected upset was USC losing to Stanford. The Cardinals were a 41 point underdog and pulled off the biggest upset spread wise in years. John David Booty was hanging around in the Heisman discussion but this is the type of loss that puts you on the shelf. His inconsistent play finally caught up with him.
Boston College has moved up to #4 in the nation and Matt Ryan has broke the top 5 of my list. Ryan has come out of nowhere this season to enter this race. Majority of the people out of the Boston area didn’t see this one coming at all. He has gone form the unknown to right in the middle of this race.
1. Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
McFadden rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown against Chattanooga. His jump this week doesn't have so much to do with his performance but it has to do with my top 2 coming up short in their big games this past week.
McFadden continues to look like the favorite to win the Heisman but history suggests that his team can’t lose many games and expect to win. Arkansas already has 2 loses and they still have 4 tough games on their schedule.
Stock: Steady
2. Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
I know I said it would be a make or break week for Tebow but he played well and his team still lost to LSU. Despite the lost, I’m still on the Tim Tebow bandwagon. He played an excellent game against the best defensive team in college football. Tebow totaled 225 yards and 3 touchdowns against the #1 ranked team in college football.
Florida is still one of the 10 best teams in the country in my opinion and I have a hunch they’ll play LSU again in Atlanta, with Tebow in the middle of a Heisman race.
Stock: Down
3. Andre Woodson, QB, Kentucky
Andre Woodson had a poor game against South Carolina. To state it simple, Woodson and Kentucky failed their first of three big tests this year. South Carolina beat up Kentucky pretty good on Thursday and now Kentucky has the tough task of bouncing back against the #1 ranked LSU Tigers.
Andre Woodson did throw 2 more touchdowns but he had an interception and a costly fumble against South Carolina. This week it’s LSU’s defense and next week it will be Andre Woodson vs. Tim Tebow.
Stock: Down
4. DeSean Jackson, WR, California
DeSean Jackson and Cal had a bye week but they moved up to the #2 ranked team in college football since USC lost to Stanford. California is clearly a national championship contender but the Pac-10 is very tough and anyone could lose to anyone just about every week. It’s not on par with the SEC quite yet but it’s closing the gap. Jackson looks to continue his hot streak against Oregon State next week.
Stock: Steady
5. Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
I’m not as high on Ryan as most people are right now but I’m starting to warm up. I think he’s a legit contender and I wouldn’t rule out Boston College maybe running the table this year in the ACC.
Boston College has two tough road games this season. They have to go on the road to Virginia Tech and to Clemson. Those will be tough tests for Boston College and Matt Ryan. So far this season he’s passed for 15 touchdowns and 1,857 yards. Notre Dame is getting better but Ryan has the ability to put up big numbers on the Irish defense this week.
Stock: Up
On the Bubble
Steve Slaton, RB, West Virginia - 625 rushing yards and 9 rushing touchdowns.
P.J. Hill, RB, Wisconsin - 750 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.
Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii - 1,850 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, 6 interceptions.
Mike Hart, RB, Michigan - 976 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.
Dennis Dixon, QB, Oregon - 1,238 passing yards and 12 touchdowns.
Ray Rice, RB, Rutgers - 622 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. |
