30 Best Fantasy Football Receivers Volume #4 |
|
|
11. Javon Walker - Denver Broncos
Javon Walker is an interesting player. In Green Bay he posted his one huge year and that really got him talked about as one of the elite receivers in this league. I’m not sure that he’s on that type of a level but he is certainly talented and certainly a #1 fantasy starter this year. Walker last year put up solid numbers despite playing with the often inconsistent Jake Plummer and a rookie in Jay Cutler. This year I like Jay Cutler and I like the Denver Broncos to push the San Diego Chargers.
I think Jay Cutler to Javon Walker is a big reason why that might occur. Walker benefited from Brett Favre’s gunslinger mentality where he would take chances and throw the ball deep. Jay Cutler is considered by many to be very Brett Favre like and he’ll make those throws at times too. Cutler should improve this year and Walker’s numbers should come close to his 2004 campaign. I wouldn’t bank on that exact impact but I do think Walker has the ability to put up great numbers in Denver and get into the discussion as one of the AFC’s best receivers. Look for Walker to come off the board by mid to late round 3 and if he’s there in round 4 take him immediately.
12. Lee Evans - Buffalo Bills
The 1st of my underrated receivers is Lee Evans. Evans and J.P. Losman seem to have developed a chemistry and it’s growing. Last year Evans caught 82 passes for 1,292 yards, and 8 touchdowns. Not bad for a player that is hardly talked about by the national media. Lee Evans has his breakout season last year and I expect him to continue with that type of play this season.
Evans is in the same category of Andre Johnson. He could drop in your draft because of the team he plays on. Evans would be a nice pickup in late round 3 to early round 4. He could work as a #1 receiver on your team and he could be a very good #2 receiver on some teams. Evans is not a guy you want to avoid because of the Quarterback and the team. J.P. Losman probably isn’t getting the Brett Favre comparisons that he got when was drafted but I don’t expect him to really hurt Evans’ statistics this year. In fact I think Lee Evans is so talented that he should be able to overcome any ups and downs Losman might have. The one thing I worry about in Buffalo is a Quarterback change. If that happens then Lee Evans could see a decline in production. Right now though I would take Evans and not turn back. I think he’s got a Pro Bowl like season ahead of him.
13. Andre Johnson - Houston Texans
I have 3 really underrated receivers in this top 15 and Johnson is the second to be shown. Andre Johnson is a great talent and he’s coming off the best season of his career. Last year he put up All Pro numbers on the Houston Texans. Just let that settle in for a second. This year Johnson happens to pair with Matt Schaub and that will form what will be a nice duo.
Talent wise I don’t see Schaub and Carr all that different but I do like Schaub in Gary Kubiak’s offense and for that reason I think Andre Johnson could benefit from the Quarterback change in Houston more than anybody on the roster. Like Marques Colston, Andre Johnson is not an elite player but I do like him as a #1 fantasy receiver especially as a player who will probably slip in some drafts due to the team he plays on. If you can get Andre Johnson in round 4 then you got yourself a heck of a value pick. This year I think Andre Johnson has what it takes to make the Pro Bowl. The AFC is loaded with great players and Andre Johnson is one of them.
14. Randy Moss - New England Patriots
Some of you might be a little surprised to not see Moss in the top 10. What’s not to like about Moss this year? He seems to be a changed man. He’s on a winning team. He has Tom Brady throwing him the football. Randy Moss has a lot of good things going for him. However he’s still Randy Moss but that actually isn’t the reason why he’s not in the top 10. Moss is an extraordinary talent. If I were writing about the most talented receivers in the NFL, Randy Moss would be top 3 in my book. Unfortunately for Moss fans I am not. Moss is in an offense that does not focus on one player. There will be no “Randy Ratio” this year. Tom Brady will spread the ball around and throw to the open receiver. Whether that’s Wes Walker, Donte Stallworth or Kelly Washington. He will not force the throw to Randy Moss.
Randy Moss is still good for probably a 10 touchdown projection this year but I wouldn’t count on 1,500 yards receiving. He’s not going to see enough passes to obtain that type of number. He’s going to be bigger asset to Tom Brady in the red zone than he is as an all around receiver. Now I would not object to Moss being taken higher than the 14th receiver off the board. He has probably more fantasy upside than any player in fantasy football this year. However just remember New England will continue to do their own thing. They won’t change because they have Randy Moss and because of that Moss’ numbers might not be as high as some are expecting this year.
15. Marques Colston - New Orleans Saints
Last year Marques Colston came out of no where with his season. Colston was probably the favorite to win rookie of the year for most of the season. As a 7th round pick from Hofstra, Colston put up 1,038 yards and 8 touchdowns. He lead all rookie receivers in just about every receiving category. This year Colston is going to be relied on even more. The Saints parted ways with Joe Horn and now Colston is the teams true #1 receiver. Despite brining in Robert Meachem in the Draft, Marques Colston remains the top receiver on the team.
I think Colston could end up being one of the better #2 fantasy receivers I the league and a #1 in some leagues. Reggie Bush’s presence takes all the attention away from guys like Marques Colston and Deuce McAlister. It creates more lanes for Drew Brees to throw into as well. Of course there is always a chance Marques Colston pulls a Michael Clayton and has a huge sophomore let down. However with the offense he’s in that seems very unlikely. Colston is one of those borderline receivers that could be a very good #2 starter or one of the last #1 starters in your league. |
