In his third full season as the San Diego starter, Philip Rivers appears to be coming into his own. 2008 was the best season of Rivers’ still short career and it was beauty to behold. Not only was 2008 Rivers’ first foray into the 4,000 yard club, but he also set career best in TDs (34) and passer rating (105.5). The bad news is that despite Rivers’ extreme success, this didn’t quite translate into wins. Despite winning the ultra-weak AFC West with a shoddy 8-8 record, 2008 was the Chargers worst season since 2003. Rivers certainly did his part and 2009 should be no different.
With Tomlinson apparently running out of gas, Rivers will be called upon to do more with his arm then ever before. Rivers still has Antonio Gates, Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson to throw which is always a good thing. The emergence of Darren Sproles is an exciting time, but it is unlikely that Sproles is nearly the pass-catching back the Tomlinson ever was. In any event, there is no reason to believe that Rivers’ numbers will drop-off so it’s a safe bet to have him #1 on your fantasy roster.
