Our Take on Matt Cassel
by Skipster McNernie |
I purposefully put Matt Cassel and Jay Cutler together because their situations are so similar to each other: Both had stellar seasons in 2008, both changed teams, both have taken a dramatic step down in organizations. You can argue to me all you want about how good Matt Cassel is but when you leave Randy Moss and Bill Belichick for Dwayne Bowe and Todd Haley, there’s going to be a drop-off in production. Oh, did I mention that you no longer have your hall-of-fame TE to throw to anymore?
In the scheme of things, it’s no secret that the Chiefs are trying to rebuild and in this rebuilding period some things will be lost in the fire. If nothing else, Cassel and Bowe are two young, talented players to build a franchise around. It might not happen this year or next year, but as the talent around them grows, so will their numbers. I would consider this year “the courtship” or in dog terms, the butt sniffing period. Cassel should be a decent back-up option, but until this team gets moving in the right direction, things will be uphill for Matt.
