  1. St. Louis Rams - Bradford, Sam, QB Oklahoma
Bradford moving into the #1 spot in this mock draft obviously had little to do with the combine. Although it was reassuring to see him looking strong and weighing in at 6'4" 236 lbs at the combine and lighting up his pro day workout. This position is based on what I think the Rams will do, not what I would do. Based on everything I've read and what is best for their the team long term their GM wants to take Bradford. If he can't trade down to a position where he can still select Bradford he'll take him here. Bradford is an extremely accurate QB and has enough arm strength to make all of the NFL throws. Bradford has played in the spread offense so he hasn't had to read defenses, but he's very smart so he should be able to pick it up quickly. If he can overcome playing in a spread offense, he should make for a fine NFL QB.
  2. Detroit Lions - Suh, Ndamukong, DT Nebraska
Unless you're a Lions fan you probably haven't seen most of the games they played this season, but everyone saw that game on Thanksgiving. As a D-line that was the worst pass rushing I've seen in years. Rodgers was just sitting in the pocket and there was nobody within 4 yards of him most of the time. Schwartz is a defensive guy and he knows that having a force in the middle of the D-line dictates everything from his days in Tennessee having Hayensworth. Suh's been more productive at the DT position than anyone I can remember seeing the past 10-15 years. The best words to describe him are he is incredibly disruptive. If you haven't seen him play it's kind of hard to describe how he constantly creates pressure on the QB, sheds blocks, bats pass down or intercepts them. He's not the fastest guy I've ever seen off the snap, but he always creates pressure. He's not the most fiery guy I've ever seen, but he still makes things happen. He's not the biggest guy I've ever seen, but he never gets pushed back and stops the run. In short, Suh is the best player in the draft.
  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - McCoy, Gerald, DT Oklahoma
Dominik and Morris will be happy to see McCoy fall to them thanks to the Rams taking Bradford. This year's draft is deep at DT, but McCoy has the quickest acceleration of any of the DT's that can also help stop the run. He's also a great leader, he just doesn't have the run stopping ability and all around play-making ability of Suh. Any other year and McCoy would be the top DT picked. Those 23 reps of 225 lb at the combine were certainly underwhelming, but McCoy did demonstrate lower body explosiveness and as long as a lineman has either upper or lower body strength he can be successful.
  4. Washington Redskins - Okung, Russell, OT Oklahoma State
I still think the common fan and draft analyst has been spoiled by the number of talented OT's that have been available in the draft the last few years. Okung and the rest of the OT's available this year aren't in their league and shouldn't be taken as high as Long and Thomas just because they happen to be LT's. However, Okung put up 225 lb 38 times which is very impressive before he got hurt at the combine. He is a a very good pass protecter which is essential for a LT. He isn't overly physical though and is average in the running game. He is strong enough though to keep pass rushers from the QB which is all that really matters. C. Samuel's career is over so getting the best LT in the draft is now the highest priority.
  5. Kansas City Chiefs - Williams, Trent, OT Oklahoma
I've been writing for some time now that although the Chiefs need a RT to protect Cassell, Williams wasn't a good enough player to take here. I still feel that way, but I have to concede to how I feel Pioli will use this pick based on his past experience reaching for T. Jackson with the #3 pick. I still think this is too high of a position for Bulaga due to his short arms and average speed and agility. Williams had an outstanding combine which has helped him to move to this position. Williams moved to LT for his senior season but had an up and down year there. However, he was a great RT his junior season and helped to make Bradford an elite prospect. Williams has great strength and footwork as a RT and is assignment sound in his run blocking. Perhaps in time he will see more snaps at LT and become an even more balanced OT, which would give the Chiefs more flexibility with B. Albert.
  6. Seattle Seahawks - Bulaga, Bryan, OT Iowa
The Seahawks really need LT, RB and an upgrade to the secondary so they could go any of these directions with their 1st two picks. With W. Jones halfway out the door due to injuries and age the Seahawks would be lucky to have Bulaga fall to them. Bulaga's stock dropped a bit after having fairly short arms at the combine and not showing much strength on the bench press, but after trading down in the 2nd round it's really now or never to get both a good LT and C.J. Spiller. Bulaga has always been a great run blocker over his career, but his pass protection has really improved and he showcased that by completely neutralizing Derrick Morgan when they played Georgia Tech in the last bowl game.
  7. Cleveland Browns - Berry, Eric, S Tennessee
Holmgren kind of spilled the beans that he doesn't like Clausen enough to take him with this pick. After reading the entire interview and getting an understanding of his logic, I believe him. The first thing he said the Browns do need to address is the secondary and Berry is the best secondary guy available. Berry has incredible instincts in defending the pass. He has great hands and can really read the QB. He's pretty good at defending the run but nothing special. However, he had an outstanding showing at the combine by running a 4.4 40, he showed great leaping ability and he looked good in position drills (besides dropping a ball). That along with his game videos which show his superb instincts against the pass show why he is the best safety in this draft.
  8. Oakland Raiders - Campbell, Bruce, OT Maryland
This pick has Al Davis' stubborness written all over it. After seeing Davis insist on taking Russell, McFadden and Heyward-Bey based on their measureables or potential instead of production how can anyone doubt this pick? Campbell, Mays and Dunlap all put on clinics at the combine but Campbell was not only the most freakish, but he plays the position that is of most need to the Raiders. Campbell has all the tools to be one of the better tackles in the NFL, but he didn't play up to it at Maryland. He gave up sacks to lesser competition at times and he isn't a good run blocker. However, being able to run the 40 in 4.8 seconds and doing well in strength and agility tests at the combine will be enough to win over Al Davis.
  9. Buffalo Bills - Clausen, Jimmy, QB Notre Dame
The Bills have to get stability at the QB position before they even think about challenging teams like the Jets and Patriots. Clausen is cocky, confident and a bit arrogant, he is a superb QB with great mechanics. Clausen was groomed by Weis at Notre Dame in a pro style offense. Weis helped to develop Tom Brady, but he also helped Brady Quinn who hasn't had much NFL success. Clausen appears to be better than Quinn though and much more consistent. Clausen can make all the NFL throws and is pretty accurate, so he would be a great first step in rebuilding this once proud franchise.
  10. Jacksonville Jaguars - Bryant, Dez, WR Oklahoma State
Bryant's personal workout did little to change my opinion of him, which is a good thing because he could only move down from his current position. Running a 4.53 in the 40 is plenty fast for the type of weapon he is in an offense. Jack Del Rio found a diamond in the rough with M. Sims-Walker but he needs a receiving threat across from him. Crabtree slid last year with rumors that he was a bit of a prima donna (which proved to be true due to his holdout) but Bryant will slide due to an average 40 time. What makes Bryant special though is his body control. That along with his agility and hand-eye coordination allows him to constantly win one-on-one matchups even though he usually doesn't get a ton of separation. Bryant will round out a receiving core that will stabilize the Jaguars for years to come.
  11. Denver Broncos - McClain, Rolando, ILB Alabama
As a whole the Broncos faired better this season than I thought they would. The biggest surprise was the defense and how well they played but they wore down a bit as the season went on. They need to continue to build the foundation and they need an ILB to do that. McClain is an old school type of ILB in that he is big, strong, a great tackler and another downhill type of player. He has fantastic instincts and quickly diagnoses running and passing plays. He's always in the right position and although he didn't participate in the combine due to injury he did pretty well at his pro day. He ran a 4.68 in the 40 which is good for a 249 lb guy. That along with his college production makes him a great pick.
  12. Miami Dolphins - Williams, Dan, DT Tennessee
Parcels is really into bigger players so long as they can still play well and Williams fits that description perfectly. Williams is a great run stopper in his own right and weighs in at about 328 lbs. He has more agility than "Mount" Cody but isn't quite as consistent. In the end though Williams is the stronger, faster player so they ultimately choose him over Cody.
  13. San Francisco 49ers - Haden, Joe, CB Florida
Singletary did well with the players he had last year, but he's going to need some fresh blood at CB to get this team where it needs to be. Haden is nearly a shutdown player at a critical position. He's a quick, a great tackler, athletic and smart. He batted down a lot of passes at Florida and he got his share of INT's to boot. This is a deep class for CB's with Haden leading the pack and after running a 4.43 at his pro day he has re-established himself as a mid 1st round pick.
  14. Seattle Seahawks - Spiller, C.J., RB Clemson
***Pet Cat Alert*** The Pet Cat Alert is just a phrase I use for one of my favorites that I would take in the draft much higher than everyone else says he should go if I were a GM. Some of my past pet cat alerts include Percy Harvin, Ray Rice, Donnie Avery, D. Rogers-Cromartie and Antoine Cason. It's hard for me to move C.J. Spiller down this low but due to the Seahawks moving down in the 2nd round they need to take a LT with one of these picks and more teams have a OT need than RB. The Seahawks should start looking for their future QB if not this draft then the next, but one of the first things Carrol said when he came to the Seahawks was he was happy to have an experienced QB to get things going so I believe he will stay with M. Hasselbeck and pass on a QB in the 1st round. However, I think the Seahawks have the lousiest RB's in the league, plain and simple. I think Spiller will almost be the second coming of Chris Johnson, only he's not quite as fast and thus won't be quite as productive. Spiller won't have 2,000 yards rushing in as season, but he will get 2,000 yards from scrimmage. He has fantastic hands for a RB, great vision, and he's extremely fast. He even started running with a little more power his senior year. He's also a terrific return man. He will be Pete Carroll's version of Reggie Bush (the USC version anyway).
  15. New York Giants - Morgan, Derrick, DE Georgia Tech
Coughlin obviously isn't satisfied with his defense as he has fired the defensive coordinator. The Giants gave opposing QB's too much time to throw the football and Osi is in the dog house because of that. If they are going to be successful changing the DC won't be enough to restore their pass rushing dominance. I have Morgan ranked a little lower than some, but I think most people had him ranked that high in the first place because Kiper had him so high. I try not to overreact to anything Kiper says and Morgan's overall body of work doesn't warrant a top tier pick yet. He would be a steal at this spot though and the Titans would be wise to pick him up. Morgan has prototypical size for a DE (about 6'4" 273 lbs) and has had a productive junior season. He is an excellent pass rusher and does very well against the run. He needs to be more consistent with his assignments though and maintain his position to prevent the big play. On the other hand, when he doesn't do that it's usually because he's somewhere else making the big play which is a good thing.
  16. Tennessee Titans - Graham, Brandon, DE Michigan
The Titans have simply got to get more pressure on the QB from their D-line. Graham wasn't immediately on the radar of most casual fans after the season since he played on a lousy Michigan team, but he has been one of the most productive DE's in college football the past 2 seasons. He has recorded at least 10 sacks the past 2 seasons and had a ton of TFL's. He really shined during the Senior Bowl practices and won the MVP award during the game itself. All in all, he's a great football player and would help Fisher mitigate the loss of K. Vanden Bosch.
