Before you read this draft, I would like to state that this draft is very premature and things will definitely change come April. One year after seeing the Dolphins nearly set an NFL record for most consecutive loses in a single season the Lions go 0-16 and now carry that on their shoulders. The Lions are in total rebuild mode and it will take a while before they will be able to compete. Some of the most glaring needs are at the three most critical positions; Quarterback, Offensive Tackle, & Defensive End, and the Lions will likely use their first three picks (1st, 21st, & 33rd) on those positions. However I believe the Lions go quarterback with their first pick because this draft class is weak at the quarterback position, while it is stacked at both the offensive tackle and defensive end positions. With that being said the best quarterback at this juncture is Matthew Stafford of Georgia. Stafford has all the intangibles you look for in a franchise quarterback (Leadership, Accuracy, and Arm Strength) and has shown that he can create with a moderate supporting cast. He would also give the Lions someone to build a team around on offense.

It was widely publicized that the Rams would’ve drafted Jake Long had he been available at the 2nd pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. While things didn’t work out the fact remains that the need for an offensive tackle is still prominent as Orlando Pace is way past his prime, and Alex Barron is better suited to play the right tackle position than the left. With that being said the Rams have an excellent crop of offensive tackles to chose from. I believe that the superior prospect is Michael Oher out of Ole Miss. Unlike his counter parts Andre Smith, Eugene Monroe, and Jason Smith Oher is a well rounded prospect that is just as good at pass blocking as he is run blocking. Oher would come in and play right tackle until the team needs him to move back to the left side after Orlando Pace retires.

While a quarterback would be the preference to the average fan the play of Tyler Thigpen allows the Chiefs to be flexible and draft a quarterback in the later rounds. Not to mention that new GM Scott Pioli doenst believe in drafting quarterbacks early in the draft. (It wouldn’t shock me if the Chiefs and Pioli traded for Matt Cassell) With that being said the Chiefs struggled in just about every defensive topic imaginable giving up nearly 400 yards and outing. Pioli loves drafting linebackers and he drafts the best one in this draft in Aaron Curry. Curry would be the building block of the Chiefs newly founded 3-4 defense as he is versatile enough to play rush linebacker or inside linebacker. He is arguably the best defensive player in this draft.

While a receiver would be the flashier pick and may be a bigger need, I firmly believe that no receiver is worthy of a top five pick. History has shown that drafting a receiver in the early part of round 1 is a big risk, and I believe that Michael Crabtree is overrated and a product of his system. I expect him to run somewhere between a 4.52 and a 4.64 forty yard dash and if he does that he will she is draft stock crumble similarly as Dwayne Jarrett’s did a few years ago. Therefore I have the Seahawks addressing another need at the offensive tackle position by drafting Andre Smith. Andre Smith is a mauling presence at 341 lbs, yet is deceptively quick on his feet. He is primarily a run blocking offensive tackle and would help out the Seahawks dismal running game greatly.

The Browns were fortunate to sign Eric Mangini as their head coach because they wont have to have major personnel changes. Because Mangini is a defensive minded coach I believe that this pick will be between Malcolm Jenkins, Brian Orakpo, and BJ Raji, all of which would do wonders for the Brown’s defense. In any event a #1 corner is a greater need for the Browns so they go with Malcolm Jenkins. Jenkins is a great defensive back who has hall of fame potential. He would fill the void left after the Leigh Bodden trade.

I believe that the Bengals are the worst team in the NFL and the franchise is in a complete depression state. They are in total rebuild mode and will likely use this pick on an offensive tackle or defensive end because Marvin Lewis knows the best way to build a team is from the inside out. The top offensive tackle available is Eugene Monroe of Virginia. Monroe would protect Carson Palmer’s blind side and team up with Anthony Collins to give the Bengals two solid yet young offensive tackles. Monroe is regarded by many as the top senior offensive tackle in this draft, and it is hard to disagree with that. He just slips a bit because he refused to play and practice in the Senior Bowl. He is the next prodigy of great Virginia offensive linemen and I believe is a better prospect than former first round picks Branden Albert and D’Brick Ferguson.

I believe that the Raiders will likely invest this pick to once again build around Jamarcuss Russell via Jeremy Maclin or Jason Smith. While Maclin is the “sexier” pick I believe that the Raiders need to find a player to protect Russell’s blind side before they get him a go to receiver. I also believe that they can get a stud receiver like Darius Heyward Bey or Percy Harvin early in the second round. Therefore they draft Jason Smith who would fit perfectly in the Raiders zone blocking scheme. Smith is a very athletic offensive linemen who is a former tight and who has loads of upside. He excels as a pass blocker and is the best “pass” blocker in this draft, however he needs to work on his run blocking skills.

The Jaguars defense lost its swagger after trading away Marcus Stroud to the Bills. I believe that was a big mistake and it surely has come back to haunt them. In any event the defense will taske another big hit if they lose Mike Peterson via free agency as expected. That’s why I have the Jags drafting a stud inside linebacker in Rey Maualuga to man the defense for the next ten years. This pick makes so much sense because Jack Del Rio loves defense and is a former USC linebacker, and always goes back to the well to draft players from his alma mater, and this pick is no different.

The Packers will see major changes to its defense in 2008 switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. The Packers will have to totally re-evaluate their draft board and draft personnel to fit its 3-4 defense. In any event the Packers use their BAP (Best Available Player) theory to draft a stud d-tackle in BJ Raji. Raji would fit perfectly in the Packers defense and could start from day 1. Not only is he a big run stuffer at 334 lbs, but he has shown the ability to get to the quarterback having totaled 8 sacks in 2008. A dominating week of practice at the Senior Bowl has him flying up draft boards and now he is a legit top ten pick. He would be the center piece of the Packers 3-4 defense for the next ten years.

While Shaun Hill has played sparingly throughout the 2008 season Mike Singletary and company simply cannot pass on the opportunity to draft a franchise quarterback in Mark Sanchez. Mark Sanchez has some questions to answer as a quarterback after only starting one year in college, but he has yet to play his best football. He can sit a few years and be groomed by Hill until he is ready to take the reigns. A local kid who has all the intangibles of a franchise quarterback Sanchez may be the best quarterback to step foot in the 49ers franchise sense Steve Young.

The Bills have needed another pass rushing specialist to go along with Aaron Schobel for the past few years. The Bills finally get their guy by drafting Brian Orakpo A.K.A. O-Sak-Po who would provide the Bills with a great young pass rusher at the right defensive end position. I believe that Orakpo is the top defensive end in this draft, and will fly up draft boards with a great combine. He could go as high as pick #3 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Broncos have a super bowl caliber offense, but inconsistency at the running back position (the Broncos had 7 running backs on injured reserve) came back to bite them towards the end of the season. There is no clear cut starter heading into the 2009 season, but drafting Moreno would give them the consitency needed. While there is pressing needs on defense I just cant see the Broncos passing up on a talent like Knowshon Moreno at this juncture. Moreno is the definition of a zone-blocking one cut running back. He would be a very dynamic playmaker in this offense and would provide Jay Cutler with a great receiver out of the back field.
  13. -
The Redskins have some big time questions on the defensive line, and that is why I believe they will take the best defensive lineman available. I believe that player is Peria Jerry out of Ole Miss. Jerry would give the Redskins a very athletic defensive tackle, who is great against both the run and the pass. Jerry has impressed scouts during the Senior Bowl week and is now a lock to go in the top 15. He would take pressure off of Jason Taylor and open up blitzing lanes for the linebackers.
  14. -
If the Saints don’t retain Jonathan Vilma then this pick may very well be an inside linebacker like James Laurinaitis or Brian Cushing, however I believe that the Saints will find a way to get Vilma back onto the field in 2009. The Saints have one of the most inconsistent defensive back fields in the entire league and will likely upgrade the needs via the draft. The top defensive back available at this point in the 1st round is Vontae Davis of Illinois. Davis is a rare athlete who simply has a knack for making the big plays. He will be a shut down corner at the NFL level and is also great in run support. (One of the hardest hitting defensive backs)

Despite spending numerous first round picks on the defensive line prospects such as Amobi Okoye, Mario Williams, and Travis Johnson the Texans still have problems in their front four. They especially struggle at getting to the quarterback as the team as a whole only had 25 sacks on the season. (11 of which came from Super Mario Williams) Therefore the Texans draft the best defensive end available, in Michael Johnson. While some may say this pick should be Everett Brown, I believe he Is better suited to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense than defensive end in a 4-3 defense. Johnson has tons of potential and is a great athlete who will run somewhere between a 4.55 and 4.65 forty yard dash despite standing at 6’7 & 260 lbs. He has the ability to add about 20 pounds to his frame and keep his quick burst off the line of scrimmage.

We have seen in years past that elite running backs of the NFL play only at a high level for 2-3 years and with all the rumors about the Chargers trading away Ladanian Tomlinson I believe that the Chargers will be in the market for a #1 back to replace him. Even if the Chargers do manage to keep Tomlinson they should get him a compliment back to take some pressure off of him, Chris “Beanie” Wells would be a great compliment to Ladanian Tomlinson and if they do trade him away then Wells power combined with Darren Sproles elite speed would give the Chargers a great one two punch at the running back spot.
